9” Backing plates

I usually hang out in the 48-56 site but have a question that you guys may be able to help with. My 53 & 56 both have 1972 9” rear ends in them. While “fixing” one of them out of the vehicle it was dropped and bent both backing plates. I’ve been trying to find replacements but am coming up with zilch. The Bendix part numbers are stamped into the plates 316279-R & 316278-L. Has anyone got a source for new replacements? The only thing I’ve found close is a Currie complete backing plate that is complete with shoes, springs and a healthy price tag. Thanks for any help you might have.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any NOS, none on ebay.

Thanks Bill,
Seems crazy they aren’t around anymore. There had to have been thousands made. I guess disc brakes killed further production of them.

You might want to try a place called Quick performance, He sells reconditioned 9'' housings and brake kits, maybe he will sell you just backing plates. I bought a brake kit from and it worked out good.

Yeah I just went through this a couple of weeks ago myself, but my axle was installed and moving down the road. That was not a fun day. Only right side damaged on mine.

Those backing plates were basically only a 68-72 item, I'm sure ND will jump in with correct numbers there. What I can find is that after 72 the axle and backing plate offset changed, which required a redesign of the backing plate. Later backing plates won't match up right with the earlier axles and drums. I ended up getting mine used from a member of one of the Facebook groups.

If this helps this is the tag on the axle.

WES is a 9" from a Passenger Car. I cannot make out the 1st digit of the suffix, but it might be a T

WES-T2 = Ford 9" Rear Axle / 2.75-1 / 28 spline axle shafts = 1971/73 Mustang/Cougar.

2BB = Assembled the 2nd week (B) of February (B), 1972 (2).

Passenger Cars use different backing plates than F100's. You will have to measure the brake shoes, because there are two different backing plates.

10" x 1 3/4 brakes: C9OZ-2211-C Right & C9OZ-2212-C Left .. Backing Plates / Obsolete

10" x 2.00" brakes: C9OZ-2211-B Right & C9OZ-2212-B Left .. Backing Plates / Obsolete

1968/72 F100 2WD/4WD have 11" x 2 1/4" rear brakes.

These car backing plates were also used on 1968/70 Falcon/Comet & 1968/72 Fairlane/Torino/Montego, may be easier to find than the F100 plates.
