Overkilled my Sterling 10.5

I just got done yesterday with my Sterling 10.5 rear diff service. The truck has 46,700 miles. I also cleaned, prepped and painted my diff cover and that diff plate that goes on over it. I used Lucas Synthetic 75w140 gear oil and 10.5 oz of Lubegard Diff additive (3 oz to 1 quart; 3.5 qts gets 10.5 oz of additive). I forgot what a PITA it is to change the diff oil is while laying on the ground under the truck. No wonder people don't do it often. I also added 4 K&J high temp rare earth magnets to the diff. I also used a Lube Locker rear gasket.

Coming out it doesn't look horrible but not like new either.

I wiped this down then forgot to a take a pic. It had some oil breakdown crap on the cover for sure.

This is 4 thin coats of Chassis Saver by Magnet Paints. Paint Over Rust to Stop Rust Permanently With Chassis Saver Truck & Auto Underbody Coating

4 coats of Chassis saver on the plate. I want to try to prevent more rust from forming between the cover and the plate.

Rustoleum flat black over the Chassis saver. Didn't like the shiny paint.

Flat black

The Lucas oil came wrapped nice from Amazon.

The LubeGard doesn't come wrapped but should because it was a little oily on top but wrapper seemed secure. No major fluid loss though.

The Lube Locker 10.5 gasket and two free stickers!!

Close up.

LLR-F105

These little *******s are strong magnets.

Wicked strong.

this was the way I was going to have them but switched to next pic.

All four in that center "pocket" at the bottom of the diff case.

This is Rustoleum's matte hammered grey or whatever it's called paint.

In the truck, torqued in two stages. Had to buy a cheap half inch torque wrench at Harbor Freight because my Craftsman one was shot. First stage torqued to 16 ft lbs. Second stage to 33 ft lbs. Drove it around the block but we will see if any leaks when hot. I don't think so though.

Nice write up.....hope it helps others.......and yes...pain in the patootie to put the gear lube in the rear.

I assume you have the ELD rear? I noticed you didn't mention anything about a friction modifier.

AMSOIL came up with a solution to help. I have used a hand pump on the lubes, then they pioneered the baby food method. I haven't tried it yet, but I love the concept.

Dave, curious why you didn't go with the Ford finned aluminum differential cover?

I have that differential in my 08 Super Duty and the owner's manual says lube is lifetime unless submerged. I'm at 185K with no problems.

I'm thinking they copied that from the baby food people... they came out with it first.

But I'll tell you, I likey very much... Great idea.

I thought of it but didn't want to spend the money. I already had the Chassis Saver paint, flat black Rustoleum for the plate but between buying the gallon of Lucas, the Lube Locker gasket and the 32 oz bottle of LubeGard, I didn't want to spend anymore on it.

Plus wanting something different for the cover. A little disappointed in the matte hammered Rustoleum for the cover but oh well.

It says 100k miles in the 6.7 Powerstroke Supplement manual for a rear diff change under normal driving. Did you see the dark stuff on the inside of my cover due to the Oil breaking down? I'm not saying that my rear diff oil was totally shot but I feel it should be replaced like any other fluid. It's not meant to last forever. I also wanted to place those magnets in there to pull some of the wear particles out of the fluid. Plus I wanted to add the Lubegard to improve the base Lucas oil. Everyone's MMV.

I changed mine at about the same mileage a few months back and was glad I did.

Don123, mine looked about the same. I agree with you. Mine is not leaking at all so I must have done it right then. But I have to get a better pic of the painted cover because those I posted don't look that good.

Hey Chuck, what's the capacity on that cover? It doesn't look like it sticks out as far as the steel cover. 3 quarts??

Okay, I wanted a better shot of the painted cover so I just took some more. Let's see how they turned out...

Who else but a forum guy goes outside at night with a flashlight, to lay on the ground to snap pictures of his truck rear differential??

Still not super clear but oh well, maybe I'll have to knock down the resolution of my cell camera or not...
