Okay here it goes I'll see if I can explain this right.
I have two Ford f250s. One is my daily driver it is a extended cab lariat edition 6-speed manual transmission 2 wheel drive truck with the 7.3 l turbo diesel engine in it with 232,000 miles
I recently purchased a 2000 Ford f250 super duty with a 7.3 turbo diesel engine in it with an automatic transmission 4X4 303,000 miles for a screaming deal of $900. The four wheel drive truck has 4 bad injectors, the transmission is very weak.
Both trucks are the lariat extended cab version.
I would like to convert my 2 wheel drive into a 4 wheel drive with a 6-speed manual transmission. How hard would it be to convert the two wheel drive into a 4 wheel drive by combining the two trucks into one?
I'll start the conversation with: How bad is the 4x4 truck that you can't just put the other 7.3 into it? (Yeah, I know, it's higher mileage, but you're going to use the running gear from it anyway, so...)
The manual transmission will need a different tail extension so it'll bolt up to the transfer case. Isn't the 4x2 front end coil springs? How is all the stuff under there attached? Rivets to the frame? That's a biatch.
Simple answer You can not just bolt the 4r100 transfer case to the 2wd ZF6. You need to source a good used or re-manufactured 4x4 zf6 made for the 7.3.(your zf6 can be switched to the 4x4 but you need the rear housing, main shaft, and who knows what else.)
The frames are the same. You literally just unbolt all the front suspension and switch it to the other truck. However the ZF6 will need the 4x4 shaft and tail housing, and maybe the transfer case adapter..? I'm not sure if the 4R100 adapter is the same. You'll need the driveshafts, possibly the transmission cross member, and carrier bearing. The manual transmission has a slip spline in the shaft version the slip yoke shaft in the auto trans setup.
