76' F-100 Custom, Rough start, idles, dies soon as put in gear
The truck has become harder and harder to start lately, once properly warmed up it will idle just fine until...... you put it in drive or reverse and then it will die every single time rendering completely useless.
Is this due to the Motorcraft 2100 2 barrel carb? Possibly an ignition issue? I have no idea please help. Thank you!!
I attached a picture of a Edelbrock Twin Snorkel 600cfm 4 barrel carb with electric choke I found including the original performance manifold from Ford rebuilt with papers all for $350..... Will this be the quickest, easiest fix?
A number of questions come to mind, like
1, when did your symptoms start?
2, had your truck been sitting for a while? (ie, in storage, or is is just that you hadn't drove it in a while?
3, when was the last time you gave it a tune up? plugs, wires, changed the fuel filter, cleaned the carb, checked the timing?
4, have you put a new gas cap on it recently?
5, did you by chance buy gas from a bargain gas station recently?
to me, judging by your description of your symptoms,
it sounds like it could either be a plugged fuel filter, the accelerator pump on your carb. is on its way out the door (simple carb rebuilt is in order) or you may have a vacuum leak, check ALL the vacuum lines for signs of aging, crack and splits.
(I'm betting on a vacuum leak)
It is best to do the things you can that don't cost money before throwing a ton of money on parts you really didn't need in the first place
IMHO I don't think simply slapping on a different carb, intake will solve your issues....If I was you, I would be thinking to myself that rebuilding a used carb NO MATTER what the seller says (unless you witnessed him rebuild it in the last 10 minutes before I bought it) would have been key in buying it in the first place.
anyways may your fix be a quick easy and simple...
keep us posted as to your findings
