Good day guys, Ive been searching for this information forever now, and I can't find information pertaining to my exact swap here. I have a 1978 f-250 2wd, originally with a 400m that currently sits in pieces in my shop. I have found a running 1984 f250 4x4 460 motor that i pulled out of a truck just yesterday. The truck was an automatic, but I want to use my original 4 speed. Now, I keep seeing people say just use a 390 flywheel, but since my motor is EXTERNALLY balanced, would I just be able to use a flywheel from same year as engine from a truck with a manual? Will my 400 clutch bolt up to it? I have my 400m starter that worked on this automatic flexplate, so I'm sure I just need the same tooth count.
Next question, as far as I am concerned, I just need a motor mount from same year truck that had a 460 originally, and keep my perches for the 400m?
And I'm already questioning the front sump swap. Do I just need a pickup tube? Or a whole new assembly? Sorry for the long drawn out post, just trying to get straight answers, I don't think I need anything other than what I listed above to put this guy in. if I'm missing something, let me know. The truck manifolds I have look like they will fit just fine, thanks!!!
Best source for a flywheel IMO is L&L. They have internal and external versions avail, fits inside 351M/400 bellhousing. You can use a 302 pilot bearing in the second (deeper) step in the crank. L&L flywheel/clutch kit comes with this also. Uses same starter as 400.
