2003 Expedition unable to read codes
I am working on my parents 2003 Expedition with the 4.6L engine. It has started running very rough at idle and dies at every stop. Now the rough idle has turned into surgging or running up and down about 200RPMS. It will restart when it dies then run rough then accerlate perfectly fine then die again coming to the next stop sign. The check engine light is on of course. Done some basics like checking for vacuum leaks or disconnected wires / bad connections but nothing so far that stands out. My issue is I am unable to pull any codes from the computer. I have tried 3 different code readers and get nothing from the car. The code readers do not even come on. I plug the same readers into my 2006 F250 and 2008 Fusion and they work fine. We are the original owner and there has never been any work done at the dealer and have never needed the codes checked before. The car has been perfect until now. Any ideas on why I can't check the codes or will I be stuck taking it to Ford finally?

The code readers do not even come on.

The same fuse powers both the cigar lighter and the OBDII port. Look it up in your owner's manual to see the fuse number and location.
The driveability issue is most likely a vacuum leak. Check the complete PCV hose system all the way from the valve cover to the elbow on the back of the intake.
