I bought my 2000 Ranger "Trail Head" and got only 1 key....I find out to get a second key it cost's over $100.00 because they have to program it...and if I lose the only key I have, I am screwed!!!! How can I get a second key for a better price? any help out there???!!!
Yeah, thats pretty much how it is with the pats system. For $100, if it includes the key, thats not too bad. Once you have 2 keys in your hand IMMEDIATELY buy a couple of extra keys, have them cut and program them to your truck yourself.
You have two alternatives that come to mind. You can use the dealership and their smart machine to program a second key. The second is to go to a locksmith and have them prepare and program a second key. In the 1st case, you may get freed up to then program your own copies, up to 8(?). The PATS actually reads the code embedded in the key. If it recognizes that code, all is OK and you can drive. If not, no go.
To program your own, you need two individually coded recognized keys, not two copies of the same code. You can get good blanks on ebay shipped, a pair for ~$20. All keys will have to be cut to work in the lock cylinder. The programming sequence requires you to insert two different coded keys sequentially, and then the 3rd key you want to add.
In short, dealer or locksmith. Last chance is to get keys that are cut, and hide the 'recognized' key under the steering wheel cover to the PATS thinks is had a 'good' key all the time.
