What motor do you intend to put it behind? That answer can make a big difference.
That answer makes ALL the difference because you have to use an adapter if the trans doesn't match the engine bell housing mount.
If you do decide to install a ZF and matching engine, that will still be a good choice.
You'll need a cross member for the trans, probably need to change the length of the drive shaft and come up with a different way to operate the clutch (hanging pedal and hydraulic clutch actuator etc.....)
The ZF is an OUTSTANDING transmission. You would LOVE it!
I Have a built 302 engine that was for a different project, thought it would be nice to have a fresh engine and a over drive trans so I can do more that 40 mph. The truck is a 48 f6. could I rob a cross member from a different truck that I could put in place?
Im working on a 351c with ZF 2wd. The C is almost done. Inbetween working 60 hours a week, I have a near fully dressed 351w I will mount one of my ZF's and use it for making my engine mounts. I wont be using the stock front suspension. I of course will have pics when i get there. I am not going resto so if i have to hump the floor, I am ok with that. But from rough eye shot I do not think i will have too.
Ok after hitting the thinking chair in the bathroom...
I remember at one time finding a picture of a zf and mazda sitting lined up side by side. Its not the clearance above the tranny you need to be worried about, its below it. The ZF is very bottom ended, not the best for a lowered application. Still trying to find the picture.
In terms of the clutch...
I do not believe i will be able to get the master cylinder wedged under the floor. Im going to box the area where the underhung pedals sit. In the location, the oem pedals stick ever so slightly into the C channel volume. soo I just took some pedals from a f350 for over hung assembly. Trans crossmebemer as well, which will need some fabrication as it mounts to the outside of the frame rails. This will interfere with the running board hangers.
So this would be a major undertaking. I plan on Keeping everything else original. Is there an "easy" transmission to scab in behind a ford small block? Thanks
