Driving the Ol' Beast

Well, summers almost over and once again I haven't done a thing to the truck. Heck, I think I'm 3 years behind schedule now....lol. A few of my buddys decided to go drive our trucks to a car show in a little mining town on the other side of New Mexico.
We started out the day with a load of furniture in the bed of my 49 F1 and my buddy's '25 GMC stakebed (I was helping my Friends son move into college for the semester) then we drove on to the show. The kid got some instant credibility, I think he's the only one in town who was moved in by 2 hot rods.
We then to a mountain road up over Emory Pass in the Black Range Mountains in New Mexico. The road is about 80 miles full of 10 and 15MPH corners...lots of fun!

There were about 140 cars and trucks at the show, my group had 8 trucks there; my 49 F1, my buddy's 25 GMC Stakebed (I call it the Rolling Wardrobe), a 49 Diamond T on a late model GM one ton chassis, a '36 White on a late model GM 1/2 ton chassis, a 47 International on a late model Dodge one ton chassis, a 46 Studebaker, a 54 GMC, and a early 50's ****** 4x4 truck. Out of the 8 trucks, 4 of them got awards; the '25 GMC, the International, the White, and the ******. It was a great weekend!!

We were able to run down the interstate at 75-80MPH. My big Caddy engine got 17MPG overall. I'm very pleased.

Next month we're running across the state in a different direction for an antique truck show. It will be about a 450 mile round trip.

I'm enjoying my truck
Bobby

Great pics Bobby, looks like a fun trip! I really like "the rolling wardrobe" and the others as well. Nice to see some old big trucks put to good use.

Thanks guys.

Yep, these trucks get used. The day before the show the 46 International was hooked to a 5th wheel trailer hauling hay. The Diamond T sees regular service as well.

I'm pretty tickled with my truck. Its a pretty good ride overall. A little hot and noisy. The comfy seats and decent mileage make up for that though.

Nice - If it's running and drivable you're not behind schedule.

That's quite a road trip for a truck that is un-done!!

That looks like a great drive!

Showing up to college in a classic truck.....priceless!!

Never done

Impressive photos Bobby; always did like the look of your ride.

Fac it, it will never be "done" anyway; I've been spending all summer on getting my wiring cleaned up. The biggest task is the alternator excitation circuit. In theory I just hook it to the ammeter, but the "toaster" I created suggests otherwise.

Good to see you're getting good usage and good mileage.

Tom

Nice to see you enjoying your truck. Mine is still far away from a road trip.

This is exactly what always inspired me to have an old truck or other vehicle: to drive and enjoy while tinkering and rehabbing it. Was never into trailer queens or old bodies on new vehicles. There's just something about getting to own and use a 'working' piece of history.

Thanks for sharing those photos. Looks like you had a blast.
