Well I put my 5.0 out of a 86 Ford back together and will drop it in this weekend. I chickened out on going with the EFI & computer set up. So now my question what distributor are you running My son has a ProComp he got off E-Bay for $70.00 and it keeps giving him trouble. Has any one ran a Summit Race Distributor? I hate to spend the $300.00 for a Mallory.
Or can some one tell me how to set up a factory 5.0 HEI distributor I know I will need the module but I have know idea of how to hook it up.
On my 83 Mustang I used a distributor for an 83 Mustang with the STEEL GEAR. DO NOT get one with a cast iron gear. One is for the stock 83 engine, the other is for a later model engine with the roller cam, which is what yours should be.
You can use it with the stock Ford Duraspark ignition, or an MSD ignition. I'm using the MSD Streetfire on mine. I think they're around $125 now...
If you use the stock distributor you won't have any way for the timing to advance. The older ones like on my Mustang are vacuum advance, where the 86 and up have the timing controlled by the ECM.
I put a TSP HEI dizzy in my 289. Haven't had it on the road, but starts right up in the garage. One wire hookup and looks like you can get one delivered for around $50 shipped. The only minor issue I had was that the HEI is big, and had to get a riser for my air cleaner.
