Idling Issues

Hello, I have a 51 f1 with a 1966 283 engine with a edelbrock intake and a holly 4b carb with a 700r tranny. Every time i start it the idle is to low.I adjust it up to where it needs to be and put it into gear and the idle goes way up.even if i put it bake in park so i have to idle it back down. The next day its the same thing. Any suggestions would be apreciated. Thanks

If this is an automatic choke, it sounds like its either not adjusted properly or is not working. Before getting too deep into this, I would check the engine's timing, and make sure the advance is connected to the correct port on your carburetor. Next look at some baseline adjustments on your carburetor. Check to see if the floats are set correctly, then get it up and running, make sure the choke plate is opening and open all the way vertical, (if it's an electric choke make sure it has 12 volts going to it) and then set your idle adjustment screws. Next set your base idle with the idle set screw. After that's adjusted, set your choke cap in the middle notch, and now put the carb in fast idle, and set the fast idle screw on the passenger side to around 1200 to 1500 RPM. To set your carb on fast idle hold down the choke plate while opening up the throttles, this will put you in fast idle. Hopefully after this is all checked and done, the first thing in the morning, you will be able to simply press down on the accelerator, it will set the auto choke and run fast idle, the truck starts, runs on high idle for 15 to 20 seconds, then you tap the accelerator where it will return to curb idle. If the trucks starts and runs good on high idle for a few seconds, but then starts to run rough, it means the choke pull off is set too rich. That is a simple adjustment, but it takes a while to get right, as will the idle adjustment.
I hope this helps! Sorry for the long reply and I will learn more too as others FTE members weigh in.
