Hi everyone, I own a very well-maintained '98 Expedition XLT with the 5.4. My father previously owned it and took excellent care of it. It now has just over 170k miles and suddenly will not crank over. I have been driving the car daily for several months now and have not had this problem before. I had moved the vehicle to another spot in our driveway earlier in the day yesterday without issue, then went to make a 2-hour trip in it and it wouldn't crank at all. I thought the battery was totally shot, but we jumped it with my Dad's Silverado and after several minutes of 3,000+ RPM from the Silverado's engine the Expedition still would not crank over the slightest bit. My battery voltage was over 12.2 volts when we gave up trying to jump it.
I had been having a problem lately with the gear selector. The selector had been having play in the Park position, and the play got to the point where the engine would not crank unless I wiggled the selector into Neutral. I had been having to start the vehicle in Neutral gear 90% of the time for the past 6 weeks or so. Yesterday, it didn't matter what gear I put the selector in, it would not crank over at all. Does it sound like my transmission range sensor might need to be replaced? I believe my Dad had mentioned that he had either had it repaired or replaced at some point after 100k miles. Any help would be hugely appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Thanks so much for the help! The two torx screws were loose and tightening them completely fixed the slop in the shifter, but the car still wouldn't start. We checked for voltage at the starter relay as well as at the starter solenoid. The solenoid was getting power with the key in the start position, but nothing was happening. The whole starter assembly was pretty corroded, and striking the solenoid with a hammer didn't do any good. Got a new Duralast Gold starter in it and she fired right up. Thanks again!
I Have A 1997 Expedition And The Other Day I Was Driving Down The Road And It Just Died On Me. I Got It Off The Side Of The Road And Tried To Start It Again But It Would Not Start. It Will Turn Over But Will Not Start.. I Have A Quarter Of A Tank Of Gas Still In It. I Checked The Fuel Cutoff And It Was Alright. It Just Acts Like It Is Not Getting Gas. But If Somebody Would Please Let Me Know What Else To Check I Would Appreciate It. The Engine Is 5.4 Tritton Engine. XLT.....Thanks
I have been reading some of your posts and you seem to know the Navigator pretty well! I was hoping you could take a look at my posts plus my album to see if you could help me out? I would really appreciate all the help I can get! I have been working on this for almost 3 months!!!!
