What Gear oil and Tranny Fluid is needed on a 97 Expedition
Hey there all,
I am having trouble finding information and the Owners Manual seems contradictory to everything I read in the forums, (Big Surprise).
The owners manual say the Axles are filled with Synthetic oil and does not need changing for the life of the vehicle, unless a leak is suspected or the vehicle will be submerged.
I keep reading that regardless the differential gear oils need changing every 35k-100k depending.
Which is true or recommended?
If I do change it out, I have always heard at least with motor oil that once synthetic is used you can never go back. What gear oil weights should I be using for the front and rear differential, (Synthetic). I keep reading 75W-140 for the rear, but I have not found anyone referencing the front 4x4 differential.
I think the front is a lighter weight like 80W-90 or something.
My other question would be the transfer case. I know it is Tranny fluid and not gear oil, but what am I putting in it? I do know it is 2 quarts, but what type do I need?
Thanks all and I hope this turns into a go to place for people seeking the same answers.
I went down to the local dealer and talked to a few of the mechanics there. I was told to use synthetic gear oil 75w-140 for front and rear diff's. Front calls for 80w-90 but he said it was fine to use synthetic and then you could change them at the same interval. What interval you want to change them at is up to you- from my understanding synthetic is supposed to be good for 100k. I doubt I'd let mine go that long. It is an expensive thing to do with synthetic though @ about $20 a quart. Don't forget the friction modifier if you have limited slip in the back. Also I bought a gasket for the rear diff but couldn't find one for the front so used rtv only. He told me to use Mercon V for the trans and transfer case.

They don't put that stuff in the owner's manual just to fill blank pages. If it says it's good for life than it is. You can change it if you wish, but your just wasting your time and money to do so.
