Kind of OT: Garage find.

We were putting a LT1 back together a friend of mine owns. We were taking a beer break when some boxes on a shelf intrigued our curiosity. The boxes were there when he bought the house. He had never opened them up.

So we investigated. Low and behold there is between 50 and 100 8 track cassettes. Most have the cardboard sleeves. A few of the carrying cases as well. Elvis, Seiger and SBB, Kenny Rogers, ABBA, and a slew of bands I'm too young for.

How much market is there for 8 tracks ?

Yeah, that was some high tech in the day. Soon to be outdone by the auto-reverse cassette decks. If you get an opportunity to play one of them be sure that the rollers in the deck are soft and clean...I don't know how many of those 8-tracks got eaten in my 69 van because of crap in the deck. Good luck with the sale, I'm sure someone would love to have them.

I have a whole box of 8 tracks.......ELO, Loverboy, Foghat, etc, etc. Still have a player in the garage, I listen to them once in a while.....brings back memories of my youth.
Don't forget you need a matchbook to wedge under the tape to keep it from dragging......
Still have about a 100 cassettes too....

HMMMM, now I feel old....

Right on I'm getting flashbacks from my youth. You had to have a steamer trunk just to hold those 8-tracks in your vehicle

I was just thinking the other day how common it used to be to see tapes, usually with about 10 ft of tape streaming out of them, that had been thrown out of cars after they got eaten.

I remember distinctly Inna-gadda-da-vita had a really annoying track break, right in the >>CLUNK<<<clunk><clunk> middle of a good riff</clunk></clunk>

For the guys whos attended Truckstock, did you notice the painted and nailed-shut drawers at the bottom of the bookshelves in the living room of that house? Well, I finally got around to opening them up back in the winter. I found a huge stack of ancient old phonograph records and later vinyl 45's. The "newest" one was the Andy Griffith comedy routine he did right before he become famous back in the 1950's. The story called "What is was, it was football". Lots of ancient OLD records from way back. I was hoping for a pile of money, but oh well......

Man your friend has some good self control. I would have dug into those boxes the minute the last piece of furniture made it into the house. Ya, I can be a little nosey .

My first car had an 8 track player back in 84, it was a 75 Oldsmobile Cutlus and it came with 2 tapes. Cant remember which ones but back then they were old bands and I wasn't really interested in them. I bet you can probaby make some decent money on ebay especially with the more popular bands in the bunch.

I have a large collection of them 8 track critters too. Great bands from the latter part of the 60's and 70's, mostly rock and country rock. It's funny that now I'm hearing a lot of those heavy songs coming back and they are calling it country. What gives with that? Magic carpet ride...country? phhhttt, and sang by a not too talented girl!

I don't know why but I just can't seem to bring my self to toss them and I have to keep moving them to different hiding spots, my wife would surely ditch them if she got a chance.

I still have the player and thought about putting it in the 49 but like you say yamagrant "need a steamer trunk for the tapes". I tried a couple and they burn real good in the camp fire though, just like gasoline.

I still have a box of 4 track tapes along with a working 4 track tape deck from one of my first cars. Not sure why I keep them. There might be some value in the 8 track tapes to the right person though.

Ahh yes well, my ears enjoy the distortion and double bass of classic metal. Only now that im a bit older do I fully understand the hate-government music I loved so much for years. My generation was the late 80's for music. But I did my fair share of re-winding non-8 track cassettes.
