Thought I steped in cow crap... but...

A few months back I was driving home from a race and thought I stepped in cow or dog crap possibley becuse of the smell in the cab. Didn't think much of it until recently when the smell is coming back when its 40 to 60 degrees out side. It doesn't smell like diesel or anything I have ever smelled before.. It is very sweet smelling and happens when the truck is warm. It gets stronger when I am stopped, but doesn't matter if the A/C or heaeter is on or off at full blast.. it just smells.. Like a cross of copenhegan and dog crap.. I know when my bike over heats its smells sweet, but not exactly the same.. Could this be a coolant problem?

My EOT is around 180ish and Fwt is around 178 when it happens.. I can't get either of these to go higher, but I am putting a new thermostat and radioator flush today.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Could have a leaking heater core, and it sitting under your carpet on the drivers side molding and mildewing away. I've seen that a lot of times, smells like what you are describing if it sits a long time.

Hmm, I have a similar unidentified odor, just like that. I thought maybe the degas was leaking but there is no evidence of that. I'll have to take a look at the heater core. that's the last place I would have looked, since it is an 07 with only 90K miles.

thanks!

OK dumb question.. what is the best way to get to the heater core? Is it in the cab, or behind the fire wall?

Thanks!

The heater core on these trucks are accessible by removing only the glove box and seven screws that secure a panel on the heater box giving direct access.

Sounds simple enough. What is a common failure of them? What should I be looking for. Whole replacment or just a repair generally?

Sweet smell

Have you noticed a drop in the coolant level in the degas bottle?

Very little. I bought the truck in august and it dipped below minimum just a week or so ago. Wasnt sure what coolant was in it so I flushed it yesterday and put a new t-stat in it. Now ect's are at 190 where they were 175'ish before. Notice the eot's are higher now also.. 190-195 when I couldn't get it over 186 before. Anyways I'll be watching the coolant level closely now that its all fresh. The smell is still there though.. Not as strong as before the flush..

the heater core will show signs of leakage inside and out ,I would pull the carpet back, and see it will be damp, also one of my co workers left his spit bottle under the seat for the next day he didnt tighten the cap, No that wasent the sweet smell also had a jug of water spill on passenger side it took 5 days for the wet dog smell to go away, also the kids like to leave there garbage in the back seat.sorry Im makeing my truck sound like a sewage treatment plant,I have the fresh coconut smell now

I checked all over under the seats and what not, don't see anything. I'll check the carpet.

Is it ok to go in and out of tow mode while driving, or will that do damage to the tranny?

With the new t-stat my eot is getting up to 206 towing.. is that a good spot for it to be?

EOT of 206 is GREAT while towing. What's the ECT? You can go into and out of tow/haul all you want!

ECT was 198 if I stop it goes down to 191. New t-stat made a huge difference in both readings. Thanks for the info on tow/haul.. better to ask then assume I guess..
