After I had completely installed head studs, OEM gaskets,EGR delete, and new oil cooler I realized I had made a bad mistake. I did not turn the dowel to the six o’clock position before I torqued everything down and reinstalled everything. When I went to start it I got a very labored and whining cranking sound and no start. Can bent push tubes cause this problem? I since then have removed both valve covers and observed the rocker arms as it turned over and they seem OK but I am a novice at this too. If not the push tubes what else could cause it to be bound up. I also installed a new water pump and belt while I was in there. Both batteries are fairly new and have been on a charger since I started this project. Thanks for your help.
I pulled the oil rail on the driver side and checked them by moving the top of the rocker arms back and forth. They seemed ok some I could not move two of them but most of them where moveable with no exessive play. Can you turn over the motor with the oil rail removed with out having oil going everywhere by putting a towel over the stand pipe?
we had a hard time starting mine after all that work too but that was do to not filling the oil cooler area with oil when we replaced it. it took forever and dead batteries to get it to fire.
Its not the cranking time that bothers me it's the sound. It has a whining sound verses the usual starting sound. I feel that it is bound up somehow and not turning freely. I just just don't know how it could be bound up other than the push tubes and rocker arms.
The ones you cant move are probably in a position where they are holding a valve open, if there is a bent push rod it will be noticeably loser than all the others. Im sure you can bump the starter and cover that area with a rag and be ok, but I wouldn't full on crank it.
If it still makes that noise during cranking after checking/repairing any bent push rods, make a short video of it while cranking and post it on youtube so we can hear what you are talking about.
I'll try that and see if I can find some loose ones or cracked arms. I also put a new serp. belt on while someone was talking to me so I wasn't paying close attention to what I was doing but it tensioned up nicely and fit up to the alt. OK. I'll check that as well. Looks like i'm in for another weekend or more. Thanks for your advice.
