I have been working out-of-town and the ol' lady has been driving my truck. I know that's my first problem but...
I started it yesterday and the battery light is on and the volt meter was showing 9 or 10 volts - I am assuming the alternator is not charging.
Is there any other things I should check before ordering a new alt?
I did check the obvious and the belt is there and turning, is there an alternator fuse?
I started just now and the voltmeter started at the N on normal (w a freshly charged batt) and then click, and then just below normal, wts light goes off and I cranked and started, then 20 seconds later the battery light came on and stayed on even after reving a bit.
I would check the wires on the altnator. I had that problem and it was my big positive cable end that hooks to the altnator. It was just about ripped in half. The connection on top of altnator can work itself loose also.

First what he said. And check all your connections (battery, starter, relay, etc)
