Putting primer on with a brush

Seeing as I don't have a compressor yet but still have work to do, I was curious whether it would feasible to put primer on bare metal with a brush. Do you think it would be too thick to sand, or what other problems might I encounter?
Thanks in advance.

I did this with some epoxy primer on a section of the bed and the brush marks were so bad that by the time I got it smooth, most all the primer was gone.

If you do this, make sure you are using a very fine brush.

I was thinking more of sponge brushes. You'd have to get the better quality ones and not over-use them otherwise the foam would break apart. If brushing on is your only option, might be worth a try.

I'd test the different options on scrap metal first though.

PPG now makes a primer that you can roll on. They also make the special rollers for this too. Expect to pay big coin for this option. Using a standard roller would leave ridges. The ridges would need to be sanded out other wise they telegraph through to the finished surface. Problem with trying to sand the ridges is that you end up sanding in other spots not just the area with the ridge. So what you end up with is an uneven surface.

PS just remembered that PPG does make a primer surfacer that comes in a spray can. It is intended for small jobs such as bumper covers. Would work I guess for little spots of exposed metal.

Thanks for all the help. I guess I could rent a compressor and gun if I had to but doing small areas at different times could make it expensive.
Do paints or primers affect plastics, could I use a plastic bottle to mist it on like using a plant mister. The primer would have to be thinner too I guess?
Thanks again.
