This Is What Happens When A Reputable Company Ships A Tailgate

Just as title says. Went through a reputable company which I won't name names (F***x) Costs me $200 to ship ground to the east coast and this is how it arrives on the new owners door step.

He refuses it so I get it back and this is what I find

The middle was even worse. I couldn't even take pics it was so bad. Looks like it was dragged, tossed, and beaten to the east coast. Just wanted to share my story so no one else would have to go through it. Moral of the story, even though its expensive to ship an item and the company is reputable, they will still treat it like garbage. They did make up for it though by reimbursing me all funds back.

How it left my home:

That's effed up.

Are you saying all you got was the shipping fees back? No tailgate replacement? Was it insured?

No insurance?? That would take care of your problem.

I'm guessing there was no insurance, in which case it was a very expensive lesson.

It was definitely insured. I payed extra for it since I wouldn't ship it without it. I actually sold it on ebay for $1000 shipped and got all my funds back. Took a month though....

And pack and crate it like it's C-4 explosive. Just because the company is reputable, that doesn't mean the guy(s) who loading or unloading it won't think twice about dropping or tossing it because he's having a bad day. Seen a few things in the 30 or so years in the freight biz.

It's unfortunate, but it does happen. More than likely it was no employee's fault, it got caught up in one of the machines. All of the big shipping companies use tons of automation.

I got an air conditioner like that once via UPS. It was one of those tall free standing ones with the vent that goes out the window. The bottom of the box was completely gone, along with the packing foam and the unit was definitely broken. The box was carefully taped back together again and they delivered it as is.

I think that is where the problem is. It is inevitable that some percentage of packages are going to get damaged either in the machinery or when being loaded/unloaded on the truck. Instead of patching it up and shipping it on, the company policy should be to start it back to the shipper as soon as obvious damage is identified. That way the shipper can remedy the situation with the customer faster. Instead of the customer receiving damaged goods, contacting the shipper, getting a new one sent out, etc, etc.

In the end, though, I get 100's of packages from UPS and I've only ever had 1 or 2 where something was actually damaged.

Had a similar experience with same company about a year ago with my Retrax bed cover. The shipper dropped the package off at my house while I was at home. Didn't even come to the front door to notify of delivery like usual. I wouldn't even had known the delivery was made except my wife saw the truck backing out of the drive and informed me I may have a package outside. Went to look for the package and quickly saw why the driver didn't notify of delivery. The package was beat to crap and it was obvious the unit had come out of the box at some point and the package was taped back together. The driver had to know that I would never have accepted delivery so he pulled a fast one. Inspection of the unit revealed significant damage. I was quickly on the phone to the shipping company reading them the riot act and then followed up with the company from which I bought the cover. Shipping company came back two days later and picked the damage unit back up and four weeks later I got a replacement cover, this time undamaged.

In the end, it all got worked out and I'm glad it got resolved for Bimmer. However, David was spot on with his comments. You would think the shipping company would take proactive action when they find signficant damage to a package under their care and get with the shipper vice delivering a package they know is damaged to a customer. That's what aggravated me the most about the whole situation.

did you cover the edges with bubble wrap or styrofoam? looks like just plastic wrap. that might prevent scratching but it has no cusion to it. the box still got hammered. somebody or something definitly mistreated it. next time maybe a pallet and a trucking company might be a better choice.

I always wrap sheet metal in heavy **** carpet (**** toward the inside) before wrapping in cardboard. Never had damage that way.

Do you have any pictures of the packaging before you shipped it?

Sucks but stuff happens at least you had insurance on it. Like other have said I wish instead of delivering item and hopping for best shipping companies would step up and just admit they broke stuff.

Another great packing material is carpet padding it is cheap and not very heavy.
