Stalled and wouldn't start

(1997 Ford F350 Diesel) Filled up the front tank. The next day the fuel filter light went on. I replaced the fuel filter. Went to Thanksgiving dinner (it was cold out - single digits). On the way home my truck stalled on me and wouldn't restart (fuel filter light came on again). Switched to rear tank and it started up and ran fine (fuel filter light did not come on). Is it a fuel pump, or did I get some bad fuel? Would either of those cause the fuel filter light to come on?

Have you tried going back to the other tank to see if it does it again

I did not switch back to the front tank (I wanted to make sure I made it Home - It was cold out and I didn' want to push my luck). When I got home I should have tried it, but didn't (wasn't thinking). I wil try and start it from the front tank tomorrow.

It was like it was starving for fuel. You could push on the throttle and it wouldn't go any faster than 30 mph (this was like for 5 minutes). And then yes it was like you shut the key off. When I would try to restart it, it would turn over fine but just wouldn't start. Switched to the back tank, and it started and ran fine (there was some time in between the switching of the tanks, it wasn't like it was instantanious).

Maybe it was more. But I know it wasn't a long time. Not more than a minute.

Thanks, I will try that. So, you don't think it is a fuel pump? (just curious)

I should add that the fuel filter light came on originally on my way to work, but on the way home it did not come on. I am not that familiar with Diesels (always worked on gas engines), so I don't know if the fuel filter light when it comes on , does it stay on until you replace the filter or not. I just thought of this and whether it helps or not, I don't know. Thanks! Gary

you only have one fuel pump on top of the eng. so if it was that then it would do it on both tanks

I thought about that after I posted and went to bed (maybe 1 fuel pump). I thought it was like the gas engines, 1 per tank. Anyway, I have a little more than 1/2 a tank in the front tank and about an 1/8 of a tank on the back.
