what straight 6 did i buy??

i was picking up a 5.0l from a buddies friend and seen he had a straigh six he was going to be taking to the junk yard and told him i hate to see it go that way, so i asked him how much, he said $50 and well i got it for $40. now im curious what is it. it looks smaller than my 300 for the valve cover. it came out of a 83 or 84 f150. says powered by FORD on the valve cover. how do i tell on the engine which one it is?

I thought all the I6's in the 80's were 4.9's. The closest to timeline I6 it could be would be the 240 - I would think.

Are you certain it is smaller than your 300?

I think Ford stopped putting 240's in F-150's in the 70's. I'm not 100% sure on this.

i will take a look at it sometime when i get a chance caus it is out in my storage shed. it seems smaller but maybe it is not. the carb on the intake says 78 f100 in greese pen so im thinking the carb is from a 78 or possibly it is the engine.

You could measure the stroke. The 300 has close to a 4" stoke.

Or...check the oem #s on the block.

it will be a 300 then before 80s cause the oil dipstick prsses in behind the fuel pump. so maybe the engine is out of a 78

Is it this same Powered by Ford valve cover?

If it's out of an early 80's F150, it's most likely a 300, unless it's been swapped in. Either way though, the 240 and the 300 are the same external size, so it wouldn't be smaller anyway.

Unless... Someone did something weird and swapped in an I6 out of a car into the F150, like the 250 I6 or something, but I don't know much about those.

All the small blocks had intake and head cast as one piece. Telling the diff between the 200 and 250 is just a little harder, 250 has 4 bolt water pump mounting, 200 has three.

yep bronco its that same valve cover. maybe it seems different cause its older and has now wires hanging from it

well found a use for the engine bought a 86 bronco with the 4.9l just needs carb rebuilt. but im going to take the one off the one i just bought and see how it runs
