I've got a 79 F250 with the 300 straight six that is leaking oil. I believe that I have narrowed it down to a leaking valve cover gasket. Does anybody know how much I torque the bolts of the valve cover? Also this is my first time doing this so any suggestions would be appreciated.
Where are you seeing the leak? Is it all over the head as well as the engine?
If you're going to be re-torquing the valve cover, I'd suggest replacing the gasket while you're in there. On a 79, it's a really easy procedure. Remove the air filter, move any hoses out of the way, undo the bolts, and pull the cover off. It's most likely dried, brittle, and cracked if it's been a long time since it's been done.
I'd put some of those long pieces that go under the valve cover bolts to spread the pressure out on there when I change the gasket out too. I can't, for the life of me, remember what they are called.
I am planning on replacing the gasket I was jusk asking what to torque the bolts to after i'm finished. Sorry guess I should have said that in the first place. It is leaking on the back of the head and then runs down the back of the engine. It would make sense that it is the valve cover as it only leaks when it has been running and thats the area it's coming from.
