I have a 97 F150, 4.6 w/160k on it. I have noticed my gas milage sinking and a pinging within the last week or so progressivly getting worse. Just today I was commonig back from a trip towing a camper and as I was going up a hill and the thing started to really ping and just completely lose power until it stalled and would not start. I had it towed back to the house. There are no hard codes. When you crank it seems to sound and feel like it is only kicking one cylender or two. Seems to me like the symptoms of a timing chain. Ideas anyone?
Fuel pressure OK ? How many miles on the fuel filter ? Sounds like it was running lean, with the pinging. Other than that, I'd check the cam/crank sensors, to start with. Outside chance that the MAF sensor is really dirty, which would really affect mileage, and if bad enough, could stall the engine.
Thanks guys, I will check these things out. I don't feel the cats are the problem. I have been through that on another vehicle and the symptoms are different. I am thinking the worst. I will get an iac today to try if none of the suggestions work. It does have the symptoms of a timimg issue. I wish I had a distributer to twist... ahh the good ole days.
update.. not good! I had it towed to a shop. The cam sensor went bad. It did not throw a hard code. I just took the pinging for bad gas. Won't do that again. Motor has no compression in most of the cylinders. The sad part is the motor was in fantastic shape until this. Awaiting prices from the shop for replacing the motor.
How did your truck end up with the power problem. Im having a similar issue. Ive notuced ticking on and off but mostly at start up. Now my truck wont start. I had it running a couple days ago and put it in drive and died on me. It will not start anymore. Any suggestions?
I put starting fluid in the throttle body and in started and died. It seems as im not getting gas. I could be the fuel pump. Im not sure though. How do you know if the fuel pump is bad?
You should be able to hear the pump come on by just turning the key to RUN, but only for a second or so. If it doesn't come on, check fuse/relay first. If it does come on, but the truck won't start, either rent/buy a fuel pressure guage and check that. If that's not possible, and the pump does actually run for a second when you turn the key on, (make sure the key is off, hold a small rag around the fuel pressure test valve and depress the center of the valve. A small spurt of gas at least tells you that the fuel system is functional). KEY OFF for doing this.
