1951 239 V8 oil filter

I was looking over the flathead V8 in the 51 Panel and didn't see an oil filter anywhere. By looking at some photos online, most show that there's an oil canister housing attached on the left head towards the rear.

Does anyone have any close up shots of the location, mounting and the connection/tube routing of where the oil is supposed to go?

Right after I sell one of these oil canister housings at a swap meet, I come to find out that my 239 seems to be missing it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll post pictures of my engine tomorrow.

Thanks.

Because they only filter about 10% of the oil at once - some guys remove the filter and just change the oil every 3000 miles. I did that for a few years and finally put the canister back - just because.

It mounts with the last two top head bolts and the corresponding middle row bolt. The IN line comes from the rear of the block, just right of the #8 plug and goes into the side of the canister. There should be a reducer in the line that helps to keep oil pressure up. The OUT line goes from the bottom center of the canister to the block or oil pan near the dipstick boss. Depends on the model of block you're working with.

With the canister in place it is difficult to work on the number 8 spark plug, almost impossible to properly torque the head bolts on those three bolts because the canister is in the way.

Is yours different than mine, MT? No problems with plug or head bolt access; I wonder if yours has a Car bracket? Actually, now that I think of it, mine is a car engine, mine could have the car bracket?!

I'll have to go look at the half dozen or so I have laying around, the one Ross has is definitly easier to work around, one of the other styles also has a drain plug on side? or bottom? (I forget) seems like the style Ross has does not have the drain plug? but the more cumbersome style (as MTFlat) mentiones that bolts/attaches directly under the head bolts does? but cant rememebr which is from a truck and or car?

If you need one I'm sure I have one you can just have.

I'll look in the morning. I run EAB heads too so they probably have the boss to mount where your canister is located. I just put it where I found it - 9 years ago - so the memory is a bit fuzzy...

As Josh mentioned, I know some canisters stand up higher and some flanges are definitely made for head bolt spacing... different suppliers for Henry I suppose.

Thanks for the picture, Ross. Now if I could just get a picture of the side plug and tube.

Josh, I'll check to see if I have another one around here, but your offer is a generous one. I may have to take you up on it if I can't find one of the canisters here. I'd need the same one as in Ross's picture. I remember having the three mounting holes in the left head.

From the Truck Parts CD... looks like what MT and others are describing.

Ilya, you can see my (bent up) tube going down to the side of the block; it runs close to the dipstick tube, the hole is just above the pan rail. BTW I am also running EAB heads.

That's the setup I have Ross. EDIT: Mine DOES have a drain plug. Sorry Josh.

.... and it doesn't mount on the rearmost holes - that would put it directly over the #8 plug and from Ross' picture it's clearly one bolt forward - sorry for the confusion.

So the Filter canister that MT has sits really lower then the truck style one that does not utilize the head bolts to attach. It also covers one of the head bolts as MT mentions and there is barely enough space to get a wrench on it.

Interesting though that his does not have a drain plug? seemed like all of that style filter that I have seen had a drain plug?

Also the plumbing is different between each canister, the feed line coming into the back side of the canister is in a different location per each style if I remember correctly?

Ross, I also have a set of EAB heads but will have to look and see if they have the 3 seperate bolt holes to mount your style of filter? I just assumed that the cars had the lower style with the plug?

here is a picture but is from a 49 or 50 Merc Car so may not really apply to this discussion???

note the drain plug and the line on back is down quite a bit lower than on Ross's

here is one like Ross's out of a 51 Ford truck, however I have noticed after looking through a few pictures that quite a few of the 51 52 trucks I looked at had filters like MT's only they had a drain plug.? hmm

Another from a 51 truck but has 8BA heads? so not sure it was original?

from a 53 F600

I'll see if I can take some pictures of the tubing on back side of the one 52 truck engine tonight

Mine doesn't have a drain plug. That 8CM Merc filter is interesting; the oil comes in low, all others I have seen come in high. I would think the ones that use head bolts for mounting must be add-on's, able to be used on all 24-bolt heads.

My engine is an 8BA. These pics are rough because I was standing on my head almost with my cell phone shoved down against the firewall. You wanted a pic of the other tube. Here's a pic of mine with relation to the oil pressure sending unit (which i think is wrong for my 49). It's farther back on the block and different than jmadsen's earlier pic. The line closest to the camera is the fuel line. The vertical line is the oil line coming off the block toward the bottom of the canister.

This pic is of the tube as it comes up from the side. You can see it going into the bottom of the canister on the intake side. Notice the fuel bowl above for reference.

And mine has a drain plug too. The drain plug is directly opposite the head pointed toward the left fender.

Sorry for the poor pics. By the way, if any of you have a little tiny man who can get up there and get that oil pressure sender out, let me know if i can borrow him. It's gonna be hard to reach. LOL

It's easy to get if you pull the trans cover off, and go at it from inside the cab. That doesn't appear to be the correct sender.
