Hey all couple of quick ?'s. Buddy of mine just bought a 2000 Expedition and came to me looking for some info. He wants to put a CAI and some bigger wheels on it. Just wondering if anyone has good advice on wheel size, without any rubbing. Also I was looking at K & N and Volant for CAI's any real world experience or other options?. Thanks in advance. Blams
You should plan on trying to keep an overall wheel/tire combo under 32 inches tall and 11 inches wide. I don't see any reason why you couldn't fit something huge like 24 inch rims, but you probably don't wany MY opinion on big wheels or cold air intakes
I like to get the opinions of all who care to leave it. Often times others opinions are things I hadn't thought of. I think my buddy is trying anything he can to gain some MPG, he got rid of an Accord when he bought this, obviously big wheels arent going to help. Any thought would be appreciated. Thanks again.
Big wheels hurt pretty much every aspect of performance. They hurt braking, acceleration and fuel economy. I also wouldn't bother with a CAI as there is no benefit to it. You will hear more intake noise but that is about it.
The best things he can do to try and improve mpg are to keep the truck in a good state of tune and run higher air pressure in stock sized tires. I would do the plugs, coils and fuel injectors. Sounds like a lot but some shopping around will reveal some good deals.
What kind of mpg is he seeing now? Accept that it will never do better than 20, even downhill with a tailwind. City mpg will be in the low teens. This is a V8 powered, 6000 lb truck, shaped like a brick so there really isn't any magic formula to good fuel economy.
The other part of the equation to consider is how much do you spend to save? $300 for a CAI buys 100 gallons of gas. You could easily spend thousands in an attempt to save hundreds.
Hard to tell what he is getting for MPG's at this point as he has only owned it for a couple of weeks. We drove it to the Buffalo Bills game last Sunday and saw 13.8 MPG's. It was about 450 miles round trip. That was with six of us piled in it. I am wondering if a tuner like the Edge would help, I have one on my 06 F-150 and am seeing 16.4 AMPG over the last six months and I drive 90% urban/rural and 10% highway. Both of us have the 5.4 but I believe the Expy has the 2V. Anyway thanks for the thoughts.
