f350 MPG's

hey guys i got a 97 f350 4x4 351 e4od 145800 miles. It runs awesome, shifts good. just did brakes. It has 225 75 16 tires on it. Stock size says 235 85 16 on my door sticker. I just seafoamed it today also. Im getting like 7 to 9 miles per gallon. I had a open air cleaner on it before but thought it was causing my popping problem. Turned out to be plug wires. I got better miledge with the other air cleaner on, I think. Could it really make up the difference of 3 to 4 MPG's. I also have hills every direction I go, so I know they dont help, but everyone says I should be getting like 12 to 14. Any info on how to increase it would be helpfull. Thanks........Cody

Less weight equals more miles per gallon.

I get 12 MPG running 65 MPH on a flat interstate highway with my '92 F350 4X4 w/5.8L engine, E4OD transmission, 3.55 gears and 31" tires. I was running 8-10 before I did a six litre tuneup, Bassani y-pipe, 3" converter/muffler/tailpipe and swapped in an air intake tube from a 460.

is there anything I can do for little to no money that might help me out. I know I could lose a 60 pounds on the truck by tacking out the truck box but I like carrying stuff on me justin case, (chainsaw, jumper cables, some tool) you know stuff. I guess if I did more highway driving it would help but I hardly do any. Thanks

Keep the tires properly inflated. Drive it like a truck, not a Mustang. Bump the timing up a few degrees. Make sure you have fresh plugs, wires, cap and rotor as well as air and fuel filters.

well I did all that. I keep the tires around 55 PSI. So I guess driving it like a truck should help. I drive it easy most times but going up the hills at 2 grand dont help much, plus I jump on the peddle sometimes cause it just runs so good. Ill see how much it makes in miledge. Thanks

start with the basics, tire pressure, all fluids and oils clean and at proper levels? how about the fan clutch? check for vacuum leaks. what spark plugs are in there? any codes in the computer? check everything. some time it's easy to overlook the easy stuff.
also winter fuel will be here soon, that will drop your mpg's even more.
I had a 96 F250 w/460 e4od and 4:10's. i got 11 mpg/summer and 9 mpg's winter,
good luck

Dave

well theres no codes in the computer, tire pressure should be good, Ive done all fluids but the front and rear diff fluid and transfer case. The spark plugs are autolite copper 24's. No vaccum leaks. How do I check the fan clutch, do I shake it or what.

These trucks really needed to have a GPM rating instead of a MPG rating...LOL

ya Ive got a 15 gallon front and a 20 gallon rear, so they hold a good amount. Although my 89 bronco has a 33 gallon, but it's all falling apart ready for the scrap yard.

Do you get the same mpg on both tanks? If not you likely have the fuel transfer problem.
