Family decided to take a trip to Orlando, so we loaded the family 3 small girls and a 75lb lab into the ole EX yesterday after everyone got home from school. Made it from Lexington, KY to Marion, GA w/o any problems. Took off this AM stopped in Lake City at McDonalds to eat and use the bathroom and bam. The tride and true V-10 won't start. She started for a few seconds and idled really low. Got her into a parking spot and now the starter just spins the motor and nothing happens. I "THINK" it might be a fuel pump? The traffic was so loud and I couldn't really her the buzzing of the pump or not? Got her towed to the local Ford dealer and are staying at a HI Express here in Lake City at least until Monday.
Any of you guys have any other ideas why it won't start.
Here are the stats...2002 V-10 43,000 miles. All fluids changed at 37,000 miles including spark plugs, boots. This EX could pass as brand new if you didn't see the 43,000 miles on the odometer.
I'm at a loss! Plz help and give me some suggestions..
Certainly sounds like a fuel pump. Since it's at the dealership, I guess you'll know soon enough.
Next time (hopefully there won't be a "neXt time"), if the traffic is too loud, have someone turn on the starter while you get down next to it.
Anyway, I'm in Tampa, but have a few friends up in the Lake City area.
Just out of curiosity, does the Theft light on your dashboard flash on and off really fast or just a steady slow flash once every 5 seconds or so? If it is flashing really fast, then your PATS key is no longer matched to the computer.
Sounds like the fuel shut-off switch could have tripped for some unknown reason. Hope it is something that simple. Instructions for resetting it are in the Owner's Manual.
Could also be the Idle Air Control Valve, if you push the accelerator peddle slightly down and it starts and runs that's your problem. Also to check if you have fuel pressure you can cycle the key a few times and then push the schrader valve on the fuel rail, gas should shoot out indicating the fuel pressure/pump is working. Good luck!!!!!!
Thanks for all of the help! The EX is at the local Ford dealership as it had to be loaded on a flatbed tow truck. The driver said this was his first EX he has ever towed!! I really had a tear in my eye watching her get hooked up.
I am almost positive it is te fuel pump as it seemed like it was using the remaining gas it had in the engine and after that was gone, the engine would just spin and not even turn over.
I don't have the keys to her anymore as they are at the dealership.
Hopefully tomm AM they can get it right in and we can get to Orlando. We will need to hear from the dealership by 11am or I will just rent a car and drive to the house we rented as we have to be out of the hotel by 11am anyways.
HMMM...What to do with a dog, 3 kids and 1 wife in a hotel all day?
I'm glad I brought a case of beer on the trip! I tapped into it last nightafter we got settled in
Thanks again and I will post what they find out.
How much do ya guys think a fuel pump installed will be?
I have all of the old parts just for piece of mind. I hated to spend 1K, but what can you do! The Ford Tech had an outside lift he was working on and he said he did see numerous - V-10's with the same problem???
OH WELL..Off to Sea World tomm.
This is the first breakdown I have ever had with a vehicle! Not sure if the age or the miles let thie fule pump go?? OH Well.. I still lover her. Gave her a bath today as FL is starting to see those love bugs that will eat your paint away if you don't get to them quickly enough.
Just out of curiosity, did your Ex stall prior to this fuel pump failure? Mine one day stalled while sitting in traffic. The RPMs suddenly dropped while idling. No warning or anything. AC was on at the time. I put it into N and restarted it. Ran normal after that.
