Chris, was your 5.4L pre 2005?
The 3 valve 5.4L that started in 2005 makes more power and torq. Also, I should add a disclaimer that I have "tuned" my 5.4L
A 2008 F350 5.4L with 4:10 gearing has a payload of up to 4000lbs with a tow weight of up to 11,200lbs (I am not to sure, as I can't find the tow rating).
The GCWR would be in the 20,000lbs+ range (my F250 with 3:73 gearing is over 19,000lb GCWR) and the truck would weigh 6800lbs empty.
I won't pass the average vehicle, and if I push it, I can climb almost any hill at 90km/h, but I don't push it too often (try to keep the RPM down below 3500). Also, loaded up to 15,000GCWR on a 30C day with smoke in the air, I climbed a 4km long hill at 80km/h / 3,300RPM without the engine or tranny temp rising much.

The camper with water, propane, batteries, food and such is usually about 3400 pounds.
The boat/trailer combo with gas, and extras we carry in the boat, such as genset brings the total to 4600 pounds on average trip. The cab totals maybe 700 pounds of people.
I will put overloads on the rear axle of whatever truck get, especially with a long hitch extender to tow off, and the heavy camper.
A low geared differential 5.4 may work well.
Its never going to exceed 110 kms on the road with me driving anyways. Usually on roadways with posted speeds of 80 or 90, sometimes 100. So general travel is about 85 to 95 kms, and 100 to 105 on roads posted 100.

I'm late to the truck conversation but I just recently bought my 2001 F250 crew 4wd with the mighty 6.8. It's been pretty close to my old 5.8 fuel economy-wise, in town, about 20L/100km. Power is awesome, though I haven't towed with it yet. I'm sure the 4.30 rear end helps too. There are some v10 deals out there if you're patient. I paid $5700 for mine.
Oh yeah, Happy Birthday to me!

I keep looking, but never see good ones for sale.
If anyone sees a good V10 supercab,or crewcab for sale in BC please tell me.

We will see how the rest of the run is before I can do something like that.My freezer is not full yet, three of those fish went to old timers in town that can't fish anymore. What I keep will be frozen, smoked or canned wallz.
