New Toy...coming home Saturday
Guys here are a few pictures of my new toy...It is a '78 F100 Custom, 2WD, SWB, 302, C6, Body is straight, will need a good sanding, and paint job, Interior is in descent shape as well. Engine has recently been rebuilt, along with the transmission. I will be getting all the paper work for both, so more details on that will follow. Plan is to restore back to as close as original as possible. Cost to purchase $700, plus a tank of gas, oil change, radiator fluid change, few other general items...looking forward to Saturday!!!

This one is coming along just in time...I know a few guys that work in the local Trade School, (plus some guys that attend with us). I just got confirmation today that they want to use my truck as a project for the Auto Dept....So my current '78 will be going in hopefully in a week or so (have to talk to the director next week)...to get stripped and painted! So Exciting....

Sorry for the long post, but this was my day in a nut shell...
Ok, got it home...Finally! Went over this morning (guy wasn't home, but I grew up next door to him, so he didn't mind me working while he wasn't home). Took 10 gal of gas, fuel stabilizer, carb cleaner, oil and transmission fluid. Pulled up beside it, hooked up the jumper cables for a few minutes, (wouldn't even click to start with). Sprayed down the carb (2bbl motorcraft), with cleaner, checked all the fluids, all were good (full at least), emptied about 9 gals of gas into the tank...kept a gal to play with the carb, and prime it...after about 15 minutes I dumped a container (Vienna Sausage Can) of gas in the carb, let it sit for a sec, turned the key, boom it fired up, then went dead. tinkered around a few more minutes, finally got it to idle. It ran for about a minute, then died out...figured it wasn't getting fuel, especially after pumping the carb, and nothing would spray out. Had to leave (prior engagement). Came back, brought the battery out of MY OTHER '78, put it in, turned over, but wouldn't fire. pulled the fuel filter, or should I say varnish holder...had really old gas (dark brown in color). removed it, ran straight from the pump to carb, still no spray. Worked my way down to the pump, couldn't get it to pull from the tank forward. Took my little can, stuck the inlet tube into it, fired up and ran great. re-attached it to the supply line from the tank, it fired up and ran. Let it run for about 10 min, great pressure, temp built fine as well...jumped in, backed it down the hill, drove it around the block to my parent's house, gave it some gas to "blow it out a little" spitted, sputtered, died...went through the same process, dumped fuel in the carb, fired up, but if I gave it gas it would sputter out and die...ended up towing it home. Fuel finally made it to the carb (would spray when the throttle is pumped). Will idle all day long, just don't give it gas...my guess, Cab rebuild? When it is running it Sounds really good, just not very fond of much if any throttle.

as far as the Fuel Tank...it was bone dry! The PO actually was thinking (partially). He dropped the tank, about a year ago, and drained the fuel, He just didn't drain the fuel pump, and lines from the pump up...Figure I would pull the carb next week, and see what leads too...

Also check the condition of the neoprene hoses in the fuel line. With age these can become hard and cracked and allow the fuel pump to suck air instead of fuel. There are at least two in the fuel line, one at the tank (tank to fuel line) and one at the pump (fuel line to pump). The 133" WB has a third line about midway between the front and rear, I don't know if the 117" WB trucks have this or not.
