5.4 Phaser set to stun
hey guys, I've got a 2005 expedition with codes p0340, p0344. Idles fine, but has ocassional jolt (violent at times) when leveling off speed or accelerating from constant speed. The engine is quiet and runs smoothly. I think the phaser is not adjusting smoothly( a guess). I hate to change the phaser if it's the solenoid, CMP sensor, or wiring issue. thanks, Mike

Mine ('07 5.4) was doing the same thing (no codes though). I got used to it to the point I didn't even notice it. Anyone who rode in the truck did though and I always got asked "what was that?" I also had an intermittent, occasional miss. It would miss once to maybe three times and then it was fine.
At 95K I bit the bullet and changed the plugs. Because of the random miss I also changed all eight coils. After almost a thousand miles on the tune-up the random miss is gone and I haven't had any sign of that "jolt" either.

Thanks for the input. I think I will change all the plugs and coil packs when I get under the hood. Wouldn't hurt with 110000 miles on the truck and it won't be super expensive. I still would like to get to the bottom of the p0340, p0344 codes. Ford has a TSB issued (#05132) on these specific codes, but I haven't found a copy of it yet. I will call a friend at my local ford parts dept and see if can print me out the TSB. I will post my findings. Mike

Hey Mike, I brought the expedition to the local ford dealer and they said( for $108) it was a bad alternator, just like the tsb you sent suggested. They also encouraged me to hand over $952 for them to change it. I declined their offer, went to Autozone, and returned the core within an hour. Total time to change was 40 minutes including 10 minutes to fish the 10 foot long new belt around all the pulleys. Total cost was $175. Drove over 20 miles in it tonight, no check engine light, no jolt. Thanks again, Mike
P.S. I had autozone check the core when I brought it back. It failed on their machine too, but it never stopped charging the battery in the truck. I could have saved $108.
