Question horsepower429?

I have a 1986 f350 4x4 with a 460 w/automatic trans. The engine is going out. I have a friend that has a 429 in a 1975 20 plus foot motorhome with less than 50,000 miles. I know the 460 has around 200-225 horse. What kind of horse does the 429 have due to the fact it is out of a motorhome and am I able to hook up to my 86 f350 with the 11 year differance.

Mechanically the 429 should bolt up where the 460 went. They are both 385 series engines. Now there may be other things and I'm no expert on HP in motorhomes, I sure the 75 is carbureted. Do you have FI? If not, it should be a trade out.
I'm guessing you have already figured that it would be less costly and easier to swap engines than re-build yours?

Thumbs up horsepower429?

Thanks for the reply. Yes my 460 is a carb. I do know that because the 429 is out of a motorhome it does have great low end torque and has a bigger cam for the weight of the vehicle. I guess I just wanted to know on horsepower because my friend said around 375 horse and that seemed a little high to me I thought maybe 275-300. yes it is less to replace than to rebuild, here in utah they want around $1800.00. To do myself around a $1000.00 and you can buy a long block for around $1300.00 and around $600.00 for a 100,000 mile plus engine. I can pick the 429 up for $700.00. But, do I want to pay that for a 50,000 mile and maybe the same horsepower that I have in the 460 or pay $1300.00 for a 3 year warranty 0 mile. I guess some outside replies and advice is nice. I explained and ask the wife and she looked at me with a look I have'nt seen in a long time. So keep them coming.

The early 429 (pre-'72) was rated at 365hp. This measurement was taken at the flywheel and included 10.5:1 or 11.0:1 c/r.

In '72, 429s went to a larger combustion chamber head that lowered the compression to, for '75, 8.0:1. HP rating methodology also changed in '72 to using a net, rear wheel, hp number. If the '75 429 was factory rated at 225hp, using a 25% parasitic driveline loss for the C6 and remainder of the driveline, 300hp at the flywheel would be about right for the low compression engines and your '86 460.

I'm not familiar with motor home engines, but do understand that few changes were made to the actual engines from passenger car specs.

You will lose some torque going from the 460 to a 429 of about the same specs. I'd think that would be an important consideration with the weight of an F350.
