Diesel or V-10

Obviously you guys are going to pick the V-10 but seriously what would be better on gas mileage and towing in an F-350 crewcab dually pulling a 28' pace car hauler that when loaded usually weighs around 10-11,000 pounds

Read the sticky at the top of this page. In all seriousness though, I think you know the answer to that question. The V10 would get better "gas mileage" since a Diesel does not run on gas. The V10 actually has the higher rated capacity of the two in pulling a non 5th wheel. Both are identical 20,000 lbs with 5th wheel. Fuel mileage is another story. 6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other.

It depends on how much towing versus solo driving you'll do, and how long you keep your rigs. If you'll get the extra $5,000+ it costs to pay for the diesel back in mileage and longer engine life (possibly) then it may be worth it. I think it really comes down to what we prefer in engine sound. I've had diesels, I've had big and small block gas V8's. Now I have a gas 10 cylinder, it's all on you to decide what is music to your ears to pick which engine you'd like. Pencil out how much you tow, how long you keep your trucks, how much you solo, etc. Then see what makes sense to you. I heard an auto exec one time say "everyone walks into a car dealership attempting to buy a vehicle with their brains, but they all end up buying with their hearts". Which motor speaks to your heart ? That's the one you want, Ken

That was beautiful ... I need a tissue ... buy what you like, sounds good to you, and of course what you don't need but really want.

"and of course what you don't need but really want" Oh yea buddy, this is what it really all comes down to. Cause us guys can rationalize ourselves into anything we really, really want. So much so that we actually end up believing it ourselves ! Which is all good, life is too short to drive a Chevy. I love having my V-10 wailing down the road, especially when it's surprising the poo out of somebody out of a stop light, or a roll-on race when that tranny kicks the engine down and the ear to ear grin is on your face.

I first saw that on ebay, on a decal. It said at the top in big letters, "Ford Triton V10" smaller letters at the bottom "suckin gas and haulin ***" When I went back to buy it, couldn't find it again. the suckin gas and haulin *** used to be in my FTE sig. The moderators censored it, so I just deleted it. I am going to get that as a decal too. There is a race shop in my neighborhood that also makes custom graphicas and decals for race cars. I have talked to the guy about it but he wants a 10 minimum. I will get myself one and sell the other 9 on ebay maybe.

I would probably go with the diesel, however the new V-10 coming out in '05 will have 355 horse and 455 ft-lbs. Thats a nice improvement. I'd be tempted to go with the new V-10. Tough decision.
