Hoping for some insight into my problem. The 4.6 (vin code M) in my 2002 F150 has developed and intermittent knock that I am trying to diagnose. The truck has 95K miles on it and has always had regular oil changes. I have also noticed a puff of blue smoke on cold startup which I assume are worn valve seals.
The knock is distinct and sounds like a loud tap mostly heard from the left wheel well. It increases with engine speed but is not always present. I can't seem to pinpoint what causes the knock as it it can appear or not at any engine condition (hot/cold, idle/high rpm, etc). I have noticed that it can become more pronounced at highways speeds if I accelerate.
I'm guessing I have a bad valve lash adjuster. Any other ideas?
Some further questions:
What are the specifics of my 4.6? Is it a 3v or 2v and does it have variable cam timing?
Can someone recommend a valve spring compression tool?
Where is a good place to purchase the lash adjusters, seals, and compressor. (pricing in Canada can get crazy so I usually mail order from the US)
Before you start taking things apart and just throwing money at it pick up a mechanic's stethescope and touch it to various parts of the engine while it is running. It could be a hydraulic lifter or, it could be something more serious. First locate the noise and let us know.
