Exhaust suggestions for 01 250 5.4l crew shortbed?

Hello all,

I'm looking for suggestions for an exhaust system to replace the just rusted-out stock.

So far all I could find for dual is Cherry Bomb but it's not stainless. Flowmaster has stainless, but only single. Magnaflow doesn't list an exact fit (actually for the v10).

Thoughts?

Find a local shop that does custom exhaust work. They can build you whatever you want.

Just make sure you replace your Y-pipe. The stock y-pipe is a source of restriction.

Here is thread of the system I installed on my dads truck. I have the same system (with a few tweaks) on my truck also.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...tback-2-a.html

The single 3" is plenty for the 5.4l and thats what I use on 6.8ls also. The above kit is a little louder than stock but not annoying at all. Both systems have been on for several years here in SE PA and are still in good shape. The 5.4l and 6.8l catbacks for the same year and model are identical as far I can tell. I agree with also replacing the necked down portion of the stock y-pipe with the SPD unit. 5 Star tuning also sells the Y-pipes.

Looks great and has the SS I want (flowmaster has an exact fit SS in stock).

What is the y-pipe issue and who sells those? I assume this is in front of the cat?

I'm in SE PA as well - Downingtown area.

I'm about an hour away from Downingtown. If you look on your stock y-pipe there are two spots where it necks down from 2 1/2" to 1.5". This was done to eliminate exhaust flutter on the 6.8l V10 engine which shares the y-pipe with the 5.4l. The 5.4l does not produce that flutter noise so that necked down portion just causes restriction and serves no other purpose.

You can see what the necked down y-pipe looks like in the pic.(Top pic)

The SPD y-pipe replaces just the necked down portion and welds in place. Its not a must have item but you can pick up a little power with it, especially with a custom tune.

The Flowmaster kits use nice mandrel bends. Both kits I installed are aluminized because Flowmaster only recently came out with a stainless kit. The clamps that came with my kits were not good so I didn't use them. I fabbed up the hanger/clamp on the rear of the muffler out of 304 stainless so it will never rust out. I've had my system on probably over 4 years now and so far so good.

Does magniflow make a dual cat back exhaust system or should I look for a local shop to hook me up with a custom.

i installed a Borla single exit 3" stainless kit and it sounds great. Its louder than a stock exhaust but no annoying droan when towing or anything. Stainless looks brand new after this winter's salting. FYI Flowmaster are junk, their mufflers dont flow any better than stock one did, id go with another company, also Cherry Bomb is a great upcoming company, their products are top notch and from the flow test ive seen they flow like crazy!
