7.3 idi no start

so im working on a 89 7.3 idi. we took it out of the truck and put it in a 86 f 250. we are trying to get the motor running. we cleaned the motor all up and re painted it. put it back together. it is not pushing fuel out the injector end of the fuel lines. not sure if the pump is bad or just not bleed out yet. any ideas how to tell what it is? tryed spinning the motor over for like 2 min. 10 second inervals.

welcome to FTE.

its 20 seconds at a time cranking MAX & 2 minutes between each try MIN so your starter doesn't overheat.

did you check for power at the FSS?

i can hear the sylinoid activateing in the injection pump.for the normal run and the cold start. we have tryed just putting straight power to them to and it still isnt putting fuel out. the motor sat for a year and a half to 2 years we were told. but it ran when it was parked. all the fluids were drained out of the motor. and the pipes and hoses were sealed. well intake and exaust.

Do you have fuel in the filter? Is the lift pump working?

A way to help shortcut issues would be to take the inlet line for the lift pump, and run it into a 5 gallon can of fuel, this way you can see quickly if things are (or aren't) working between the tanks and the pump.

Manually fill the fuel filter, this will save on cranking too.

Are you getting fuel to the Injection pump??

Check fuel flow at the schrader valve on the filter head, are you getting fuel there, should be 5-7psi and 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of cranking.

If not, Follow Greywynd advice and pull the suction line (line to tank) off the lift pump and attach a hose long enough to stuff into a jug of clean Diesel.

Then check for fuel at the schrader valve, once you get fuel there, one or two 20 second cranking sessions should have fuel to the Injectors, if not the Injection pump may have failed.

If you swap pumps DO NOT REMOVE the Injection Pump gear housing (as described in too many books), Ask how if you need to!

so we have a hose into a barrel of fuel and then we took the hose off the fuel filter holder. cranked the motor over 3 or 4 cycles and nothing came out the top. wondering if i put a 10 psi electric fuel pump in the fuel line if that would work instead of putting a mechanical on it?

Lot's of guys have done the electric pump conversion... I myself use one as a primer pump for when I change filters etc. IMHO for daily use nothing beats the reliability of a good old fashioned manual pump.

This is the primer pump I use.
Airtex E8012S - Electric Fuel Pump | O'Reilly Auto Parts

I mounted it inline from the manual pump up to the fuel filter. Works great when you get air in the system or lose prime for any reason.

That would be a good choice other then the fact that Airtex does not recommend that pump to be used with Diesel.

A good choice would be the Mr. Gasket 12D.

You want something that flows around 30-35gph at 5-7psi and is Diesel compatible.

However, IMO the manual lift pump is far superior to an electric pump.
