i posted a few weeks back about my dads old rusty ford. well ive decided to restore it, im getting some money together. and making it my project truck. i will be posting pics of the progress of the truck. the truck is going to need some extensive body/ engine work. but i love this truck to death and wont let it go out the way its going. i got alot of work ahead of me so you guys will see me pop up quite often. we gotta keep these old trucks going!
truck details:
1990 ford f250 7.3 idi diesel 4x4 XLT lariat.
list of things to fix:
body rust.
body mounts.
glow plugs.
starter.
alternator.
fuel injectors.
bed/body rust spots.
rear leafs/springs.
fluid changes.
breaks.
parking break.
power windows/power locks.
my first question is, how much do the older 90ish f250 parts cost.
how hard are body mounts to replace?(there rusted out.)

ya know I had just a little rust problem but not much ! My truck is really in great shape as far as rust. Have you looked on LMC truck They have all the body panels. And just about anything else you may be needing . well keep me informed and if I can help more in anyway please hit me up. I feel the same way about my truck .My father bought it brand new .And I grew up in it too .So i definately know how ya feel.

WOW, that lmc site has everything. im kinda new to diesels. as this will be my first truck. and first restore. im looking forward to the challenge,
i got a question for you guys, say your body mounts are rusted out. can the mounts them selves be replaced? and what if the frame is rusted where the body mount bolts on to frame. can the be fixed? or would it be easier to cut the frame up and splice on from a donor truck?
You mean the holes in the frame mounts that the body bolts onto are rotted out? If that's the case; some folks pick up some heavy duty washers from the hardware store, sandwich them around the mounts, and weld them on. Stronger than original if done right.
Be careful with LMC aftermarket body parts, some of their stuff is pretty notorious for not fitting correctly. See what you can dig out of the JY for major parts, and get the weld on replacement cab corners and such as you need it.
I have a pretty well-rotted 63 cab I need to take off the frame and un-swiss cheese...
I got my 1990 to restore as well, I simply need a complete body.
Complete tune up on the engine, pop the heads off for head gaskets and see what it looks like in there, you never know, 377k miles. Check bearings and whatnot, if alls good, put it back together, I do plan on rebuilding the heads no matter what but if the lower end doesn't need anything it'll stay as is.
Rebuild the ZF5, or do abit of gear swaping at the least.
Heres what it looks like right now, minus the box:
sometimes its way cheaper to part ways and start with something fresher.
good luck guys.rust repair can very costly and timely............someone has to say it lol.
Lol I know yoru mostlly saying that to me, alot of people have already told me. But nothing will seperate me from this truck!
It has way to much sentimental value to me to let it go.
It's a 1 owner truck (my dad bought it brand new in 1990), I learned to drive in it when I was 11 years old, and tall enough to press the clutch to the floor. I was raised with this truck all my life so far, and I aim to keep it like that!
I done so many other things over the years with that truck, some of witch I shouldn't of done but I had the time of my life doing it.
It's part of the family now to me.
At the same time, gives me a chance to learn to do body work, do a father and son project and have fun doing it.

yeah ive seen your videos on youtube, the 1990 7.3's are damn fine vehicles, except for the rust! haha i never thought id say this, but your truck looks to be a little rustier. then mine. ill be posting pics of the truck soon
As far gone as your body is, IDIDieselJohn, you'd do much better off finding a Southern body, and swapping it on. Here in Texas, you can find rust free, fairly straight regular cab bodies for pennies on the dollar. They're literally everywhere here.
OP: You might be in the same boat. Sentimental value should never exceed the reality check. Once you pass a certain point of decay (like John) you just cannot safely OR economically repair a vehicle, and that reality light needs to click on, and say, "a different cab is the only option."
I've worked enough wrecks where cabs that had been in good condition came apart to NEVER want to trust my personal safety to a patch worked rust bucket, and I would recommend you look at it from the same prospective.
I know that's what I want, a new/good cab. I had absolutelly no intention of fixing this one, it's way to far gone! That's why I cut the roof off, who cares at this point?
I'm keeping everything else, frame, axles, trans., engine, and interior. All i'm swaping is the tin, the bear metal, naked cab and box.
