rts 3 speed with o/d to m5od

ok guys well as some of you know i thought i had a t18 then the tailshaft mount busted off the tranny and i found out it was the rts 3 speed which its last year was '87 and for good reason too... these trannys are a peice.

now i have found a M5OD for a good price, now my question.. will my clutch, flywheel ect.. work with the M5OD?
and are there anythings i should look out for when i go look at it?

The clutch and flywheel will work fine with the M5OD. You will need a new clutch hydraulic line to go with the internal slave cylinder used by the M5OD. If you are going to replace the internal slave cylinder, do yourself a favor and spend a few extra bucks to get an OEM Ford piece. It will last longer than most aftermarket ones. You will also need a new crossmember and support brackets. You can use one from any 4x2 5-speed truck from about '88-'96 and it will be a simple bolt-in job; all the mounting holes should already be in the frame. I went from the TOD or RTS (same OD four speed as you) to a ZF and had to change driveshafts. I don't know if you'll need a different length driveshaft with the M5OD or not.

It looks like someone tried to JB weld that mounting ear back together. That's definitely the same transmission that I had in my truck. The input shaft bearing was completely shot on mine when I pulled it with almost 190,000 miles. How many miles are on your truck? You may want to consider replacing the pilot bearing before installing the new 5-speed if you have any doubts about its condition.

You might possibly need the transmission tunnel cover from a 5-speed truck too. I needed one for clearance around the ZF, but I can't say for sure about the Mazda 5-speed. Also, on the crossmember, it has to be from a 5-speed truck with the 4.9/5.0/5.8 engine.

my truck has 150,*** miles, and i think every seal in that trans was gone... my whole driveshaft was covered in oil... not to mention the po filled it with atf 3-5 different times...
and while im typeing what would be a good oil to put in this new tranny? iplan to drain and refil it just so i know its got fresh fluid..

Mercon ATF for the 5-speed. Check that pilot bearing while you have access to it.

You'll have to pull the pressure plate and clutch to get to it, but just give it a few turns with a finger and see how it feels. If you have a clutch alignment tool (I got one for $10 at Advance Auto) you can see how it feels with the pilot engaged. If you have any doubt about its condition, go ahead and replace the pilot bearing - they are not very expensive. It would be better to replace it than to risk messing up the input bearing on the new M5OD.

well hell i though i could get this done without pulling it.. oh well, mine may be new because when my clutch was done he ended up replacing EVERYTHING, every thing from the flywheel to the bell housing bolts and up to the clutch linkage was replaced, it was a BIG bill..

and i'm doing this myself because A) im tired of not seeing my truck for a week+ and B) this is going to be my career(mechanic, own my own shop) i need tp learn to do this, not learn to pay someone to do it..

Well if you know the pilot bearing is new or has been replaced, you'll probably be okay. The clutch is only another six bolts after you get the bell housing off and out of the way. You'll just need an alignment tool (or get lucky) to reinstall it correctly.
