Question New WP; replace oil cooler o-rings also?

Hey brothers, looking for some opinions.

My water pump has started to leak and after removing the belt I can move the pulley up and down as well as side to side a little bit. I think the bearings may be going out and it's just a matter of time until it craps out on me. I'm planning on getting a new OEM pump from Clay, but I'm wondering if I should replace my oil cooler o-rings as well while I've got the coolant drained.

I have no signs of oil cooler issues, no oil in the coolant degas bottle, no leaking from the cooler itself (outside of the little bit that leaks down the oil filter but I don't think that's the coolers fault). My 01 F250 4x4 has approximately 196,000 miles on the old ticker. Is this a case of A. If it ain't broke don't fix it; or B. cooler o-rings will crap out soon so may as well replace them.

I'm not sure what the average mileage is out of the OE cooler o-rings so I'm not sure. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Thanks!

Todd

I go with A but, if you have time and feel like doing it why not. I haven't touched mine yet and it was built 9-98, but my water pump is still good also.

If You have really good luck leave it alone. If You hae not so good luck like Me, then pull the cooler & service it while its easier to access.I flushed the cooling system & changed to ELC coolant, the cooler orings were hard & flat but not leaking at 210k.

If they ( oil cooler rings) are original I would change them. It won't add more than 30 min to the whole project since you already have the coolant drained. An air ratchet speeds things up tremendously for me.

With the water pump off, it's a lot easier to get to the front oil cooler mount bolts, and the coolant will already be drained. It's probably about the best opportunity you could ask for to change the o-rings.

I'd do it. You'll have the coolant drained anyway. And the oil cooler o-rings will fail.

Some guys don't even pull the front mount off. Just pry out the back and push it back together. Saw one on U tube that way. The guy made it look easy.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll go ahead and do it. Looks like the best opportunity I'll have. And I'd hate to have to drain the coolant twice.

That is how I did mine, worked like a charm. I was surprised at how easy the tube slid back into the front head. I did grease everything up pretty good & she slid right in there.

By all means !!!!! DO IT !!!!!!

Like all posted above while the coolant is out and pump is off an extra 60$$ is worth it.

Reason i say is my orings started weeping last winter. Dosent get too cold here in north fl so i wasn't too worried about them shriveling up. Well i should have don't them last week when i had the Waterpump out. Noticed Thursday they are starting to leak fairly bad. So they are on order and will be dropping the coolant for the 2nd time in two weeks (PITA) but that was my luck i guess.

And also not to get OT but if you get a water pump make sure your fan clutch is working properly and the fan its self is in good shape. And i will be getting nothing but the navistar pump next time. Cast not Aluminum and has a built in coolant filter. Just my .02c
