HELP! Cannot get oil filter cap off? What is the trick?

Tried to use oil filter wrench and cannot get it off. Is there a trick to it or what is the proper way to get it loose so I can change the filter?

Thanks

36mm socket, usually avaible at your local auto parts store for 3-4 dollars. They're usually made for 1/2" drive so don't over torque it putting it back on.

It's my preference to use a 6 point 36mm socket. This one is specifically designed for Ford diesel oil and fuel filters. It is 3/8" drive.

Amazon.com: Lisle 14500 Oil Filter Socket: Automotive

However, before I got this socket, I just used a large adjustable wrench on the nut. Make sure the wrench is tight on the nut and goes over the flats all the way.

The oil filter and frame rail fuel filter is 36mm. Earlier upper fuel filter caps are 24mm. Apparently 2005 and later upper fuel filter caps are also 36mm.

My 06 is 24mm, I just use my 1/2" drive ratchet on it, it plugs right in

DON"T tighten it to tight. I learned the hard way. I ended up cutting it out and then scared up the housing and had to replace the housing. Dam long and expensive fuel filter change. Gave me a chance to put the new spring in while it was off though.

I may be wrong. I thought I remembered someone once telling me that their upper fuel cap was 36mm. I may have misinterpreted and assumed.

My 03 also has a 24mm on the top filter cap. I use a 24mm socket on it..I've heard to many broken caps using a 1/2" drive. No saying I never did, but I have a socket now..

I've heard that using a 1/2" drive can break the cap as well. So I've always used the 24mm socket.

Edit: I guess if you want the whole set...

Don't use a 1/2" drive. Use sockets and remember the O rings seal not the threads so as soon as the cap bottoms out you should be good to go. Use oil or vaseline on all O rings, not diesel fuel. It can swell the O ring.
