Machinist List for Rebuild?

OK, here I go again. What is suppose to be included in the machinist list (390, 0.030 over). Someone from an earlier post mentioned this and since I have never had an engine rebuilt I don't know what that mean? Could someon explain please or direct me to a place that has the information? Thanks, Doc.

Machinist List for Rebuild?

Ratsmoker, I don't know. 67 428 Fairlane Ranchero responded to my earler "...finished parts list" post the following:

"... I think I would add hardened exhaust seats and possibly valves. Now would also be a good time to start a machinest list."

Maybe I should have asked what that means, I thought it was just some kind of common thing the engine guys did. Thanks, Doc.

He is talking about the bill from the machinists and what will need to be done.

You will need the block bored and honed for whatever style rings you are going to use. Molly rings require a different finish on the final hone. Should be around $100

You will need the crank looked at. It will most likely need turned to clean up the journals. If the crank needs cut the going rate seems to be $90.

You should have the big ends of the rods resized and the small end may need rebushed. Let him install the ARP bolts. Dunno the cost here but its not too much.

New cam bearings should be installed. This should cost about $40 parts and labor.

I recommend balancing the rotating assembly which is about $125 but it isn't a big concern for some people. I would never run an unbalanced engine.

The heads are a whole nother ball o wax. A 3 angle valve job usually runs $125. No telling what it will cost though becasue the guides may need replacing and the valves may need it too. Hardened seats should be installed. Heads can be pricey. Others will be able to fill you in some more if I forgot something. There are people here that actually work in a machine shop!

I just re-rebuilt a 289 for my buddy's 67 mustang. He was very short on cash. The crank that the previous owner put in was tore up bad around the sides of the thrust journal. We bought a crank from autozone and hone it out and installed new rings and bearings. We didn't balance the engine. It worked great and is smooth up to 5,500 rpm. I call that lucky. You should be able to get a good deal on all your machine work as the guys will usually give you a little off if you are having them do a lot of work. If your heads are too wore out to make it worth rebuilding them they do sell rebuilt heads for $125 a piece at autozone. I don't know what kind of quality they are so I almost didn't mention this. If you go that route at least have them checked by the guy doing the machine work for you. Probably not a good option anyway.

Machinist List for Rebuild?

Rat summed it up...BUT, ask your machinist this question: Do you know about the oiling mods? If he says yes and tell you the right procedure (Search for numerous posts on this topic) then set him lose on your block. If he scratches his head and asks what you are talking about (probable) walk away and find somebody who knows their FEs......they ARE out there.

Machinist List for Rebuild?

Hey, you guys didn't tell me that the engine rebuild guys don't put the dizzies in, or the water pump, alternator, and etc. back onto the engine. Man, I might actually have to do more work than I thought. I guess I will appreciate the journey once it's finished though. Btw, are most machinist arrogant or are they just way busy, this guy does about 8 to 10 engines per month by himself? Maybe I have been spoiled by the really nice people on this site! Just a thought. Doc.
