How many 66/67 Fairlanes are on here?
Seems like a see a ton of 66/67 Fairlanes listed in peoples signatures. I'm just curious how many are here, specs on them and pics if available.
My dad had 4 1966 Fairlanes total, now he's down to 3 after giving me this one. He bought this car in 1973 with 48,xxx miles and drove it until 1976 when he parked it, inside thankfully, with 97,xxx miles. Its a 289, 2 barrel, green dot C4. He gave me the car when I was 6 years old in 1986! For some reason it took me a really long time to get interested in it. It had been sitting for 10 years at that point. I built a bunch of fox Mustangs and my truck but still hadn't messed with the Fairlane. If I had gotten it out earlier than what I did I probably would have made a bunch of engine mods that I would now regret.
Well I finally brought it home in 2006, now after sitting for 30 years! The body is amazingly solid. It does have some dings, paint chips and scratches but what can you expect for a 44 year old paint job. There is not one tear in the head liner or seats.
I installed new brake shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware, master cylinder and lines. Still running the manual 4 wheel drums and single piston master cylinder. And bought a new gas tank, sending unit, fuel pump, water pump, timing chain and valve seals, spark plugs, wires, points, condensor, cap and rotor. Also rebuilt the carb and put a little oil in the cylinders. Well it fired right up and runs great. It's bone stock and I'll probably keep it that way. It even has the original muffler (has a hole)! I'd like to put some full length headers on it and some nice exhaust but I can't even bring myself to do that. Something will need to be done about the hole in the muffler though. It also has all 4 original hub caps but I did put some Weld Pro-Stars on it. It also gets 17-19mpg! Pretty amazing but before I even got it out my dad said he got 19 with it back in the 70s.
My dads other Fairlanes are an antique bronze 1966 XL 289, 4 speed with factory air, this car is super nice, he bought it in 1968 and still drives it today. Then he has a black 1966 XL 289, and a maroon-ish 1966 GTA 390. The engine is not in the GTA and the black XL has not ran in 30 years or more. All 4 are parked inside and I have not seen one rust hole on any of them. My dad also said if I ever feel like hot rodding a Fairlane to just grab another from him so I don't modify the bone stock one I have.

Nice to hear that you kept it orignal. I dont know how many people tell me to update the master cylinder and brakes on my 56 fairlane and 63 belair. They think its unsafe to use a single reservior master cylinder with drum brakes. I dont see what the big fuss is because you still have your cable operated "emergency brake" which can be used to stop the car. Not to mention why go to the trouble of updating to disc brakes when you now have to update to power brakes as well since it takes more force to apply the brakes with disc brakes than with the drum brakes.

the 66 7 litre was a one year only model. in 67 it was called the galaxie ltd 7 litre.
the 66 4 speed convertible had only one option available. the FM radio option.
there were only around 400 made, and most of them were cut up for nascar use. they would unbolt the convertible body off of the frame, and bolt a gutted hardtop body on after a roll cage was added.
the convertible had a much stronger frame to compensate for the lack of a roof on the body.
with the 428 engine, close ratio 4 speed trans, and 3:00 gear ratio on a 9 3/8 ring gear stuffed into the modified 9 inch rear, the cars were capable of 180-200 mph.
since most were cut up, they are very rare now.
last i heard, there are only 76 known to exist.
my car is mostly original, with 97, 000 miles on it.
the clutch, front suspension, brakes, brake lines, tires, motor mounts, gas tank and 4 exhaust valves have been replaced.
it has low oil pressure and needs bearings in the engine, and the exhaust is getting loud, but other than that, it still drives good if you can keep gas in the tank.
on its best day it gets 7 mpg. if you open the secondaries of the 750 holley up, the mpg drops down under 4 mpg.

I personally don't have any 66 or 67's but a close friend has a 66 Fairlane convertible with a 289 2brl and green dot C4. This car is unrestored and all original, I think it has around 40,000 miles. The thing is hard to drive as it has power steering and is super touchy you move the wheel more then an inch and your flying off the road. He also has a 67 Fairlane 2 door fastback that has a worked over 289, and not even sure which tranny he's running now, he trashes quite a few tranny's with that thing, all 3 or 4 speeds, I think it's a toploader right now. For a small black the thing flies. He's taken the 67 through the entire hot rod power tour 5 years in a row without issue. I don't seem to have any pictures of either, but I see them often enough I will take pictures next time I'm over there. I think they are both base models, not GT's or anything.

It's a 514, 847hp on the dyno at 7000rpm. 700 lb/ft torque. I shift at 6500, so not getting full power out of it but it lasts a lot longer. Heads flow 424cfm. Best et is 9.26 @ 144mph.
I don't have any more pics now, I'll try to get some more soon..
We actually have 3 of them, all look the same. I'll try to get pics this weekend if i remember.

Well, here's our three. Not great pics, forgot to take them till they were in the shop!
Here's a couple more of mine
couple of my motor
Here's the one dad runs. It has a 351w in it now but it is coming out and getting the 428 I used to run in my car. It will go from about 375+- hp to 550. Should run mid to upper 10's pretty easy. Best run now was 11.91. Edit after a year, but now it has a 390 in it. First run off the trailer, 10.83@123. Here's a pic of the new motor
Here's a rear view of dad's on the left and my sisters on the right. On dads i moved the leaf springs inside of the framerails for more tire room. Again, not real good pics.
And last but not least here is the one my sister runs. It has a stock 351w now with just a 4bbl and edelbrock cam and headers. Best run was 13.51. It is getting dad's old motor next year slightly detuned with a littler cam and taller gears to soften the launch a little. It should run mid 12's though. Hers is an original GT 4 speed car. Mine was an original GTA car. Dad's is kind of a clone, mixture of a gt car and lots of others! Edit: It does now run mid 12's.
That's our toys. It took me 10+ years of putting a little money here and there into my car to get it to where it runs today. It ran 12's for lots of years. Dad's car I just built 5 or 6 years ago for my sisters husband at the time, then they got divorced and I made sure the car didn't go, dad got in then. My sisters car dad found and cleanded it up and painted it and drove on the street for a long time, then decided to let my sister run it on the strip.

Friends of the family had Fairlanes. One had '64, darn near killed in it. He then got a nice '66 GTA 289 2v auto--always thought the GTA was a 390, but there it was, GTA and a 289. Then the cousin got a '67 390 2v auto, no GTA. That 289 would stay right with the 390. Well, being that them rigs were "used cars", the '66 got sold to the hayseed cousin of the gas station owner down the road. He promptly pulled that fine running 289 and installed a 406. Well, not sure what was wrong with the 406, but it would lock up when you ran it hard. Then it would break loose. Like a two-stroke motorcycle that overheats. My guess is the wrong clearance on the pistons. Not long after I heard that story, there it was like a dead whale on the beach. Stripped, the body shell on the side of the road with other junk and scrap from old hayseed's other activities, hobbies and mishaps.
I talked to the friend about it sometime later, we agreed that if he'd left that 289 in there, it would still be running.
It's a shame so many decent cars met similar fates in the dumbdumb '70s at the hands of hayseed and his ilk.
Congrats on a fine gaggle of Fairlanes. Reps for the pics and story, good luck to with them all.
