Well I was told by a guy I could put the powersteering box off of a 77 1/2 - 79 on my 75 and convert my linkage system to what he called 'High Pinion' steering. Anyone know what he is talking about? Cause I sure would like to get away from that crappy hydraulic thingy, or is there a way I could incorporate that hydraulic steering in with a power steering setup so I can have really kick *** power steering? ANyways thanks guys.
yes you can upgrade to the newer style power steering. It has been covered many times on here. do a search for it. You weld a plate to box the inside of the framerail. some people say they have to notch the radiator support or the crossmember to clear it. You may be able to have your gearbox tapped for a line for a hydraulic ram also but idk if it is possible to reuse your power assist cylinder.
The conversion isn't that difficult and you could probably get away with out notching the engine crossmember if you use a new adjustable drag link. The conversions that I have read about notch the crossmember to be able to re-use a stock '79 drag link. I have done 2 conversions: 1 on a '75 with a 2wd steering box and 1 on a '72 with crossover steering and a'78 F-250 4x4 box. Neither of them had to have the crossmember clearanced.
If the hydraulic cylinder still works it shoud be usable as a hydraulic ram assist cylinder with the new integral gear steering box from the '78-79. Here is a link on how to do it, although the tutorial may not match a Ford steering box exactly:
