Replacing grease seal?
'03 250SD, in front of the front axle, largest "tie rod" (?) about 1.5-2" dia.
The rod has threads on it toward the driver side.
It has a grease fitting on the driver side and fitting faces down.
I believe this seal has blown and will not hold grease.
A screeching sound originates from there during turns.
Anyone able to tell me what this seal is called, and how to replace?
Thanks!
It will not hold pressure.
When you pump grease into the zerk fitting it swells slightly then a bit of grease squeezes out under it to let you know the joint is full.
If your tie rod end is making noise it probably needs to be replaced.
Not a hard job. I have seen it recommended to replace both sides at the same time.
The boot comes with a new Tie rod end. As well as the fastening nut and a cotter pin.
IIRC the parts were about $200. You can re-use the coupler if it is not in rough shape but they are about $15.00 if you want all new.
Once replaced make sure you grease the joints with a good high quality chassis lube.
You may need an alignment after the job.
On a scale of 1-10 in difficulty...I give this job a 3.
Good Luck,

All of the rod ends were bad up front, lots of play, so I replaced everything.
The screeching is gone, it wasn't the ball joints.
However, I did discover that the BJ on the left bottom is bad.
Got Moog replacements for all four, also going to replace the dust seals.
That should square everything away and complete the front end.
