7.3 IDI VS. 7.3 PSD

So I found this deal on an IDI diesel F250. The guys the second owner, has 144k on everything. it's never been off pavement and only used to haul the guys boat and camper in the summer. Otherwise it sits. He said if I buy it now he'll sell for $6000. It's got banks exhaust, lifted, good paint, grill guard, bed liner, 1 ton suspension and air bags. The guys been a mechanic for the past 32 years and owned the truck for the past 15. Very clean inside. Does this sound like a good deal on this truck? I'd like to get into a diesel without the PSD price on everything. I'll be using it to haul horses and my skid steer on a flatbed. Oh and it's a five speed with a fast clutch (I forget what he called it)

Thanks all

Here's the CL link...

6k is a little high even for that. 4500 sounds better to me. But can you put a price on knowing its been well maintained????????

IMHO the being owned by a mechanic kills it for me (and I am a mechanic...) with 1 or 2 exceptions if its ownder by a mechanic I wont buy it, even from most of my co-workers.

That said it looks like a very clean truck but definatly not work $6k, thats easily PSD range.

Just bought her $5800. I guess wish me luck. I'v been looking round here for awhile and it's hard to find a nice PSD with under 200k for less than $6900. I don't have the 8k i wish I had to buy a CC LB. It's a nice truck and good enough..

Thanks yall

How many miles are on that thing? yeah it's clean, but i wouldn't have paid over $3,500 for it. you could get a nice PSD for the asking price(i know you already got it).

yeah but like i was telling him (when he had already bought the truck obviously anyway, cus he posted right after) a psd truck isn't going to have such a nice body/interior for that 6k either.....well maybe, but she might be pretty high on the miles so it's probably a trade off.

say, didn't you have one of the guys here go one step beyond ditching the factory crushed pipe and fix up your outlet too?
he's in need of the latest info/options there.all i know about it is the crushed thing needs to go.figured you guys could fill him in best on the options with that so told him to search here before just buying the banks pipe, cus right after i posted that,i remembered the pics you posted with a reamed out outlet or something.now iv got my truck pretty much done,iv stopped keeping up with the engine mods.....iv spent too much $ as is lol.all i need is a little more stainless/chrome pieces, some decent seats and maybe a turbo specific ip and im done besides repairs and maintenance from here on out.......thank the maker lol. edit,ah crap.well maybe after the us shift controller but then that's it!!!!!

Im with the guys that are saying $4500, maaayyybe $5000, but the good, clean trucks are getting pretty tough to find. Air bags arent cheap for sure. But im getting a 92 that i will bet the title that mine is cleaner and in better shape. It also has a FULL engine rebuild 40k ago (pistons, valves, balance, headwork, SMF) and a turbo (i see yours is also turbo'd) to add to the list of goodies, new tires( less than ,5k on them, Firestones) brakes (calipers and MC included), vaccuum pump, 3G, return lines and o-rings (also 0-rings in the fuel lines) last but not least a new lift pump as well.
All that for $4,000 which id say its well worth it, even though it only bluebooks at $2900

Not trying to make you feel bad, just saying maybe you shouldve shopped around a little more is all. I second what the other guy said about being careful buying from mechanics.

If it's got complete service records, maybe. Seems high for an IDI though. You can find plenty of 'em for less than that with similar miles.

If I felt I could afford to drop $6k on a truck I'd be getting a first-gen Powerstroke.

I paid $3000 for my 2000 f350 7.3, crew cab, 4x4 dually with 167k miles. Don't find too many deals like that though. That being said if I found a idi turbo crew or club cab 4x4 in real good shape I would seriously consider trading my psd for it. The psd has a lot more power but in my opinion its just hard to beat the simplicity of an idi. I still have my '93 reg cab idi with 96k miles for it and its my favorite truck. Basically if you're happy with the truck and you're okay with what you paid for it then it was worth it.

144K on that motor isn't much, but it's also not very new. When I bought my van, it had only 80K on my 7.3IDI, and it was half the price as your truck.
I didn't get to see if it was 4wd, but i guess if it was nice looking 4WD with a grill guard and other goodies, maybe over $5K is OK. How good are the treads? I could see a 1000 dollar bump if he had some nice brand new tires on it.

The guys been a mechanic for the past 32 years and owned the truck for the past 15.
As another wise poster mentioned, I NEVER buy from a mechanic. Ever. It's one of my rules when buying a vehicle.
