AN EARLY 08 JOB 1 GOOD NEWS REPORT

Since June 2009 when I moved over here from the 7.3 forum I have read hundreds of threads. Many of those were about the 08 Job1 trucks. Almost all of the threads and all of the 08 job 1 threads were negative in slant. So I thought I would file this early trip report on my 08 Job 1 truck. I left ATL in early July and am now 6200 miles into my summer trip and I'm in Oregon so it's gonna end up over 8000 miles. Right now I am just outside the Crater Lake National Park. I don't want to talk about the whole trip right now but I do want to tell you about yesterdays ride. We, (wifey and I and a dog named bogey, yes I'm a lousy golfer) left Coos Bay OR with 17,000 lbs of 5th wheel attached to the truck and drove about 225 miles or so over to Crater Lake. During that trip we encountered either 4 or maybe 5 very tough climbs. 5 or 6% grades of 2 to 3000 ft. each followed by a descent equally as challanging on the way back down on the other side. During each climb we were able to hold a speed of 45 to 50mph except when some switchbacks and my aged nerves caused me to slow down. When we slowed we were able to speed back uo to 45 or 50 MPH without effort. The truck is totally stock and it performed wonderfully. On each incline I was able to blow past all 18 wheelers, all gas powered motorhomes, all gas powered pick ups pulling even small campers and most diesel pushers. Everything in the truck worked as designed. The cooling fan came on at the appropriate times and went off as designed, once I thought it was turning fast enough that we would have reached take off speed had we been on a level runway. Neither the Water nor the tranny temp gauges moved (which makes me think I need some real gauges). The tow/haul was great and allowed me to maintain control on the steep down grades with only the lightest use of brakes. Nothing blew up or broke, the radiator did not leak and as far as I can tell based on todays drive the trip was just "routine" to the truck. I am now at 23,000 miles. Just thought some job 1 owners would like to hear this story. Stan

Glad to hear things went well for you, Stan!

And that's why I love Ford trucks. The cooling package is a lot bigger than the competition puts in their trucks, which allows long pulls at wide open throttle to not be a big deal for these things.

The new ones are no different, in the latest comparison at PickupTrucks.com: Pickup Truck News, Reviews, Community and Help Finding a New or Used Pickup compared the 2010 Ram, 2011 Silverado, and 2011 Super Duty trucks. On one hill climb the Ram's transmission temp spiked to 260 degrees while the Ford stayed within 5 degrees of normal.

When my wrecked '08 was being torn down at the body shop the manager told me it had the biggest radiator he'd ever seen in a pickup truck. He said he figured it belonged in a Peterbilt .

It's great to see someone who pushed it to it's max and came back with great things to say!

Mine is a job 1 as well, just got back from a 3000 mile plus trip to Colorado and Wyoming. I didn't have a heavy load, just the family and 4 wheeler in the back but the truck performed well. I enjoyed climbing the mountains with the power to pass whenever I wanted. I just went over 23,000 total miles too with only a radiator going bad.

Glad to see that things are going well for ya Stan. As you probably know, I put a lot of towing miles on a 6.4 and though it has it's quirks, it's a great truck to tow with and I had similar experiences to yours, just driving and watching the truck do its work.

The OBD II all in one gauge sets are really nice. I had the Edge Insight, there is one called DashDaq. Probably others too. It probably would help you too. When climbing one of those grades you'll see EGT's hover around 1300 and even though its okay, still hard not to back off and take a grade running at 1100 or so, which is probably better in the long run. Just an opinion.

Great report. My experiences are about the same. Mine is a job 3 though. That fan for me kicks on around 220F and goes back off around 215F. My coolant gauage will actually move on mine to just right of center when I hit 220F.

Trans guage never moves.

Good to hear, Stan. Mine is also a job one and I bought it in January. I have put 11,000 miles on it and about 5,000 miles have been towing. (though not as heavy as you! my trailer weighs about 5,000lbs) It has been an awesome truck to tow with, as you stated hills don't really bother these things much. Good to hear that not everyone is down on these things.

Another road trip...no problems!

I just returned today from a 1500 mi road trip to Yellowstone, pulling my 25' trailer. I also have an '08 Job 1 f250, and it did great. I love the tow/haul for going up and down mountains. I have 29 k and I'm the original owner. Only problem I've had was an O ring replaced in power steering pump (still under warranty). I use motorcraft cetane boost in the summer and anti-gel in the winter. Regen occurs about every 150 miles, but no impact on performance, and little impact on mpg. I averaged about 10.5 mpg going 65 to 75 mph. This is the best pulling truck I've ever driven.

Mine runs OK when it's not regening...!!! But that should be getting fixed soon.

It just rolled 93,000 today. Early Job 1 built in Jan 2007.

I just purchase a new to me 08' F250 Screw lariat 6.4 and have read a lot of posts that refer to Job 1, 2 and 3. I have returned to Ford after 20 years and very new to diesel. What is "Job 1"? Thanks.

I really like my '08 Job 1. It runs great, pulls my 9k 5ver really well. Plenty of power over my previous superduty, rides great, looks great, what more could I ask for?
