1986 F-150 302 carb conversion

Hi all, I have a 86 F-150 ext cab with the 302 EFI motor and I want to convert to carb. Has anyone done this and if so are there any web resources for the changeover process? any help would be appreciated.

Does it have a manual or automatic transmission?

I'm doing more or less the same thing. There is a thread called "92 f-150 with 302 swapping to carb" on the 87-96 forum:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=418662

I also found these websites that pertain to Mustangs but have good efi to carb information:

http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/e...b/efi-carb.htm

http://fast351.com/tech/fitocarb.htm

I haven't done this swap yet so if anyone knows any different please let me know. From the research I've done and since it appears you are using a 302 engine and not a roller cam engine, you need a carb and intake manifold, a distributor from a carbed, non-roller cam vehicle, a throttle cable from a carbed truck, and you will probably need to do some fuel system fabrication. Thr fuel injection fuel pump in your tank puts out 40 psi or better and a carb will only take about 5-9 psi. I was going to take my efi fuel pumps out of the tanks and extend the pickup tubes and use an in-line Holley red fuel pump.

The transmission may be another issue. The reason 61F750 is asking about your transmission is that it may be computer controlled. I have the E4OD trans and it is computer controlled. I will not be removing the computer and I think that by leaving the VSS and MAP sensors hooked up it should still shift. I don't know if the TPS plays any part in controlling the trans so I've still got some research to do.

This is a complicated and possibly expensive swap. If you decide to go through with it, let me know what you learn and I'll let you know what I learn.

Thanks for the reply. My truck has an AOD transmission in it so I don't think it is computer controlled. i was really hoping that this would be more cost effective than switching to Mass Air but from what I am seeing it will be the same or more. Looks like I may just have to buy a new truck instead of dropping this kind of cash on mine.

Yeah, all that work and expense is pretty discouraging. Any way you go it's going to cost $. What are the issues with the EFI that make you want to convert to a carb?

I really wanted to do the mass air conversion on my truck but haven't been able to find a new computer that will work the E4OD tranny. Anybody got a VEX1 or WAY1 computer?

My problem with EFI is that I dont undertand it all that well and cant adjust it like I can a carb. Also since this truck uses speed density as opposed to mass air so it is almost impossible to upgrade anything in the engine.

carb conversion on 302

I have done a little research about this as well I have a 1992 with a 1993 302 engine. I am building a mud racing truck and want to eliminate the EFI. After speaking with my local auto garage i was told all i needed to replace was intake manifold into a regular throttle body and distriputor into a regular one with the addition of a carb. ebay has good throttle bodies for $188 and a good carb is around $300

The original question was asked 3.5 years ago, I'm sure he's found something by now....
