After the recent goverment bail outs and the gov. and the UAW practicly owning GM I'm becoming increasingly more ford bias and less GM. My idi was the first ford I've ever owned and I'm hooked on diesels now. But I've never been a "Ford Guy". My wife and I are going to be needing a new vehicle soon (used of course) and we are both considering a quad cab ford or suv. I would like to know what you guys know about the late model fords, diesel mostly but gas too. I'm not looking for opions because there like... well you know. I intend on using this for family hauling, (4+ people) a small camper, an ocasional car trailer, and genral pickup stuff (lowes/ home depot stuff). Any interesting info (about models specificly or the ford motor co. anything) would be helpful. By the way incase your wondering why I'm asking here its simply because I've learned a heck of a lot from you guys and you all seem like a honest do to earth buch. Thank you.
the newest truck i've dealt with is my brother's '04 6.0l cc 4x4. parts are high, at slow speeds you can pop the wastegate pretty easy, we loaded 6 tons of sand on his 16' trailer pulled it like it wasn't there. fuel milage is par, it's very long to park, bed is short, rides very well. it is all stock.
loved my f250 6.0 powerstroke to death, 4x4 3.73 gearing and the zf6 speed manual was ext. cab with shortbed with gooseneck in my box, got awesome mileage and I used it to pull a 16' goose dump trailer from mason job sites had 119k miles when I got rid of it few months ago, the fuel injector control module wiring to the #1 and #2 cylinders had chafed and had a horrible miss, worst problem I ever had was replacing two injectors, but not because It was hard but time consuming and the injectors are very expensive! lol
I've had good experiences with the 99 7.3L 350 crew cab (Drove one for my old job, it's my next truck for towing, idi is more of a work truck/dd), and the 7.3L excursion (buddy's suv, LOVE it to death, and am buying one (or two) when I start having kids). Everyone I know personally with the 6.0 has had problems with the turbo tubes popping off, etc. But I've read a lot of people on here with good experiences, so it's your preference. I've also heard good things about the Tahoe, and it's a popular SUV in my neighborhood, but I'm bias so take what I say with a grain of salt.
could get a 7.3 but im kinda scared of the 6.0 6.4 diesels.... i haven't heard good things about them from the guys around here and the one my brother drives has terrible turbo lag...... for basic stuff though the 04 05 F150s with the 5.4 gasser are great.... buddy has a 05 FX4 F150 5.4L 4x4 that ive put some miles on myself before i got my truck on the road..... will pull pretty much anything within normal limits.... car trailer, load of lumber, camper, boat, ect..... has PLENTY of get up an go lightly loaded.... and performs good under a load too.... thats what we used to bring my truck home last winter....... had it on my trailer which is heavy enough as it is probably a 10,000LB load and it pulled it... little boggin uphill but they can do it....
they run just like the pick ups.i like the excursion for all the room, but parking it can be a pain in a small parking lot.all in all i would veer away from the 6.0,6.4 though too many problems with misc stuff and the 7.3 gets the best mileage of them all
What do you guys know about the Excursions (spelling)? I think thats the larger one, the suburban off ford
They're great for piling a ton of people in it and towing a ton as well (Same or slightly less tow capacity on a tow hitch on a similar model Super duty of similar year). For off road? At stock height it will be great on road, do like a logging road, or drive on campsite without a problem. But you would want to put a 4-6" lift on it, if you want a decent amount of clearance (the back end tends to rub when hitting a sudden uphill), or more if you wanna do some serious off roading.
Anything else you wanted to know?
(I love them if you didn't get that)
The Lincoln series really bothers me, it could be I'm still kinda young, and I have no real need to appreciate nice things, but I find it hard to justify the extra cost just because it's "luxury".
I mean 2010 Expedition 40k, against 2010 Navigator 55K... It just is something I can't wrap my head around.
Or I could just be me, growing up I always wanted a 90's F-series, from when I was like 10 and I saw my first one in my uncles drive way.
I like questions like this, cause more people seem to get involved cause there is now wrong answer and you get to know the guys on here. By the way I'd love a ford excusion, even my wife is interesed. Right now we have a equinox. I hate the thing, It was obviously desighned for taller people (I'm rather short) and it only seats 5 plus you can't fit anything in the trunk other than a small amount of grocerys. Any body want to trade there Excursion for an Equinox.
go 7.3 stroker or the new 6.7 no 6.0 or 6.4 imo they have lots of faults the 7.3 stroker is tough as nails and will go as long as any idid with plenty of power adding options and offroad kings
the dodge ram quad cabs are really nice and roomy and the durangos are awesome... wait who am i kidding all in all as for room my wifes cc ram is ok i cant make fun of it (yet), i like the excursion with the 7.3 but again they are long boats for parkin, like was said above the 05 or so tahoes arent bad either, food for thought a full size full crew cab will fit 4+ people that way you still have a bed to haul
