This is a Ford Truck site, so I am well aware of the potential backlash I will get for even asking this, but....
I am building my 57 F100 from the ground up. Complete frame off restoration. It currently has a 351C (2 Barrel), but I have no idea what kind of condition it is in. The PO put it in, but it has never run. I have a friend that has a complete LS1 with Tranny, Air, and computer that he is willing to GIVE me in trade for a 10 year old 4 wheeler that isn't worth much. He bought the engine to put in his 62 Caddy, but never completed the project. This is a very good friend who just wants to see the engine up an running, rather than collecting dust in his shop. The engine came out of a Firebird and has only 33,000 miles on it. It is practically new.
I know, I know. Ford in a Ford! But, this is basically a new LS1 complete with EVERYTHING for next to nothing! How can I possibly pass this up?
Myself, personally, being a Ford guy, ripping out a Cleveland engine to put in an LS1, or any other chev engine, is the second to last thing I'd ever do. The last thing would be to cut my frame in half and graft on a Camaro subframe. There's just so many other, much better options, imho. But hey, it's your truck, so build it for you, not for us. ;-)
I gotta go with 52 Merc here on this, its a ford and you have a ford motor in it so why not see if you can get the motor running and as far as the IFS I'd go with a mutangII or a jag before sticking a camaro subframe in there...

I am curious about something. I understand not wanting to put a Camaro subframe in because it's a Chevy, but why a Jag? Using that same logic, at least the Chevy is American made. Or is there another reason?
My problem is that the MII kits are $2000+ and the Jag IFS are non-existent where I live. I have called everywhere and nobody has them. I even tried a local Jag club, and they were no help. I have found them in larger cities, but it costs more to ship them than the cost of the unit itself.
I can do the Camaro / Nova subframe for under $300 and it has a proven track record for being a good FS. I am open to other suggestions, but that is what I have found so far.
Not to hijack my own thread, but I was going to try and find a donor rear suspension off a late model Explorer. Wanting something a few inches narrower with disc brakes. Can I find this in the 9" rear end or will I have to switch to the 8.8"?
your gonna find a lot of flack on this one as you are asking the most stubborn , opinionated , cranky old curmudgeons on the face of the earth here about our beloved FORD'S ! truth of the matter is it's yer truck , the chitty has been done many times so ...... you do what floats your boat not ours . just keep the bowtie away from my flatty or it might get bit and get a case of envy as it isn't a real engine ...................... LOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the jag is dain near a bolt in not requiring any cutting or serious frame mods , and it was owned by ford ....... not gonna say using some of gm's parts are bad though ... got a cut down points dizzy to convert to electronic the rest of the way maybe for my flatty and a rochester 2 jet to replace that pain in the **** holley possibly .... if i don't go with other parts to avoid using them ............... just don't know ........................
Don't do it. I wouldn't put a Ford engine in a Chevy either. As said on this site many years ago, you wouldn't put a baboons heart in a human, would you?
It's such a good deal on the LS1...why not make the trade and have it on hand but before you install it see if you can get the 351 running without too much expense. If it runs good then you have the LS1 for a backup or you can sell it off...
I'm new to the old truck scene and love this group for their insight regarding the history, tech, and build paths. I agree with them in that you should build it your way as it is YOUR truck, However.....wouldn't it be way cooler to have that engine package installed in a Chevy P/U that was slammed to the ground (or not) with Bowtie orange slathered all over it? otherwise it will just be another Ford with a rash!
It will be a fun project either way, but the Chevy crowd would go nuts over a vintage Chevy truck with that package installed.
good luck with the build.

I'd love to have a Cleveland to play with. Swap in the LS1 and call me when you want the trash hauled off - I'll come and get it for you. mtflat at hotmail dot com
