ques. for those runing aftermarket camshafts

ok so this actually isnt for my truck, its for the wifes mustang but its a ford 4.6 so it still counts! my anniversary is this friday and she wants cams for that drag racer lumpy bumpy idle, but I dont want to change pistons to accomodate a massive lift cam.

also, the car will be a daily driver for at least another year so i can't have anything terribly outrageous in it, it still needs to have some juice at the 2000rpm mark. it is a 2001 PI heads SOHC.

so, who has cams that idle like $#!T but won't require me to put 4.11's and notched pistons in it?

i keep getting mixed opinions on the comp cams xe274h from all the stang guys, but i am leaning towards those currently.

Look into compcams. I think the XE274H is what you want if a 5-speed.
All use the same .550 lift so no piston changes needed. Might want better valve springs to be safe though.

COMP Cams: Xtreme Energy™, XE274H <BR> Hot Street, Rough Idle

i figured springs would go in just to be safe, i heard stories of people not having problems with stock springs but i dont want to find out the hard way.

Stock springs and even the standard recommended Comp springs are insufficient for any kind of camshaft other than stock. If you want to do this right, you'll need to degree the cams to install them properly, and use a good spring-Crower and Manley make good modular springs. I'm running the 270AH in my Tbird-they're good camshafts, but if the car is an auto-you'll need a converter with at least a 3800 rpm stall speed. Much more than stock cam duration/overlap will require a tune to make it run right. If you want it done right, listen to NOTHING you read or hear on the Mustang forums-most of the people on there are nothing more than check writer wannabes that simply parrot what their salesman of the month is telling them. The Tbird in my sig weighs 3600 lbs, is N/A, has an auto trans, and is quicker than most all N/A Mustangs with a 2V that are not all out race beer-cans with wheels.

thats pretty spot on what i was thinking!

i know you dont buy a cam for idle, but the car slowly ($$$) will be built around the cam. heads and intake manifold are in the near future, exhaust and CAI are done already. its a 5 speed and im putting 3.73 in it to replace the 3.27 stock ratio. wifey loves that full on race car sound, so i'd like to get close at least to make her a little happy. do you have any sounds clips of the 270 at idle? it sounds smooth when i listen on youtube.

I'll grab a vid sometime in the next couple of days-it's been awhile since I did that on the old car-it could use a bit of runtime anyway.

a comp cams rep got back to me and rec'd the xe268h. he said it will still idle rough. youtube does not get me a good average of what the engines sound like with that cam. i would love it if i could put a smaller cam in and still have it shake a bit.

with an sct programmer could i keep the idle down at 750rpms rather than 1000 to let it break up a bit more for her?

I actually have video of the 268H in my car. That's what I was running when I first built it.I'll upload to youtube and link it in a bit.
