Happy to Own a Ford Again

Howdy All,

My 1st post here and I thought I'd say hello, looks like a great accumulation of info on here.
I was looking for a truck to have around for those occasional runs to the dump, take my boys out fishing, throw the bikes in the back etc. Last Ford truck I had was a 62 with a 292Y in it, it was babe. Always been a Ford fan, I have owned a couple Falcons and a Galaxie but kids, baby seats and a wife turned me into a sad minvan-drivin shell of a man for a few years. Now I'm single my boys are older and I pulled the trigger on this tonight:

Found it on a lot advertised as a F-150 4x4, 400 ci, Edelbrock bolt ons, and that is what title says, but it has a F-250 emblem and has the "Ranger" emblem on the side and on the dash.

I am going to check the VIN # in the morning with one of the databases to see if it is a 150 or a 250. Maybe it is evident from the pics what model it is but my knowledge of those years is lacking.

Overall she runs very good, could use a bigger battery, kinda loads up trying to get it to turn. It stayed cool on my test drive and my drive home but the stock oil pressure gauge was reading on the low end of the range, oil looked clean and no leaks. so I am not sure at his point if it is a bogus sending unit or if that pressure I am seeing is ok. Steering feels a little loose but from what I see so far on that year sounds like that is a common problem to address. I see a little leaking on the rear main seal but not drastic.

I am pretty excited to get on with showing this truck some love

-Mag

Welcome to the site man!

She looks like a great truck.Ranger emblems and the FORD on the hood means it's a 1980-1981.Judging by the parklights,it's an 81.The grille in it is from an 82-86.As others have said, check the number of lugs. The 400 wasn't offered in the F100 or F150 for these years,so i'm willing to bet it's an F250.

Glad to have ya man and be sure to post back often!

Thanks guys...
It is 5 lug wheels and I found the F-150 emblems under the seat, some joker put the F-250 emblem on the side, in the light I can see the fade of the 150 emblem now. After work today I am going to see what I can find out about the low reading on the oil pressure ga.

Drivers door lock doesn't turn and the power locks are missing from the inside door panels. Need to get on that because right now I cant lock that door.

Don't ya hate when people do that kind of stuff?Looks like they swapped that motor in there then,or they didn't know what they were talking about.

As far as the lock, check the rods that go from the handle, key lock, and door lock. One of those components could very well be stuck and need some persuasion and a little grease to get em unstuck.

She's a good lookin truck man. With a little bit of wax, that paint might come out really nice.

It's a good thing they stuck the emblems under the seat.Ranger emblems can be hard to find in junkyards. You can buy them new,but you'll pay a little bit for them, and I don't trust the quality.

Did you find the F150 emblems too,or were they broken?

Looks like the truck had A/C at some point in its life, too. I'd probably get rid of that glass fuel filter ASAP.

I think you are right, looks only like oxidation on the paint.

I found both of the emblems, one is broken but easy to glue. It's killing me to be working right now and not outside working on it.

Use an OEM setup - not sure what it is for the year. Perhaps hearsay, but they're known to burst and cause fires.
